I just got my Discharge Certificate from the Personnel Group at Nigerian Air Force Base in Lagos.  I was informed that AFMS tenure does not constitute official Air Force Service.  When I indicated that we were being paid, I was told that our pay came from Ministry of Defence and not NAF (Not sure how correct this is).

Ultimately, I was told that the only way I can receive a Discharge Certificate from the Air Force is if I actually served post-AFMS. I served for a couple of months in 1989.  They were able to access my records and my service record states that I served from 1st January 1989 to 12th February 1990.  I was also able to obtain a retired personnel ID card.

Bottom line, they would not accept by AFMS Service number as NAF Service number.  If you wish to speak to the Warrant Officer that processed my documents, I can provide it.  Just call or text me.

I was just checking on the NYSC website for reasons to get an exemption
letter for serving as a youth Corp and i stumbled on the text below:

Below are the requirements for collection/replacement of certificate of
    exemption.

In accordance with the National Youth Service Corps Decree 1993 section 2
    subsection (1) it is stipulated that;

    * "With effect from 1st August, 1985, a person shall NOT be called upon to
serve in the service corps if, at the date of graduation or obtaining his
diploma or other professional qualification" : *

    - He is over the age of thirty (30) years
    - He has served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or the Nigeria
Police Force for a period of more than nine months; or
    - He is a member of staff of any of the following:

    - The Nigerian Security Organization or
    - The State Security Service, or
    - The National Intelligence Agency or
    - The Defence Intelligence Service
    - He has been conferred with any National Honour.

These categories of persons are therefore exempted from service and issued
with the Certificates of Exemption. ELIGIBILITY Nigerian Graduates either
home or oversea trained who have the stipulated qualification of (B.SC, B.A
or HND) from approved or accredited Institution by (NUC, NTBE or NCCE) are
eligible for Exemption Certificate however while foreign trained graduates
must submit their Certificates at the Mobilization Department for
    Evaluation.

Question is does our 5/6 years in AFMS qualify as serving in the armed
    forces?

It does/has. Exjam have collected exemptiin letters before. For the Exjam
serving as other ranks in the airforce, I believe that their years in afms
are counted as part of their years of service. Any one who knows otherwise
    should pls inform us.

Ok, thanks for your input guys.

I wonder if Nigeria had gone to war during those periods would we have been
    drafted?

NYSC should be a bit more lenient to exempt people over the age of 40

Maybe those above the ages of 18 years and above! But I know people as from the ages of 16 years were recruited into the british navy to fight in world war 2. So maybe!
