Hi everyone,
We’ve released our 2019 annual review here. (You can find our previous evaluations here.)
The document was initially prepared in November 2019. As usual, we waited to hear back from some of our largest donors before releasing the review and asking other donors for support. Most claims should be taken to be made “as of November 2019.”
The review includes:
A 3-page summary of Ben’s personal reflections on progress at 80,000 Hours.
A 6-page summary of 80k’s progress during 2019 and plans for 2020.
A 7-page summary of updates on historical impact.
If you would like more detail, we also provide the following:
The full review, which includes: metrics; progress by programme; team time allocation; mistakes; cost-effectiveness; strategy updates; priorities for 2020; predictions for 2020; budgets; fundraising targets.
Appendices with more detail on the above, especially our evaluations of each programme and data on contributors to EA movement building.
Funding situation:
In December, we set out to raise $8 million to towards our Dec 19 and Dec 20 targets, to cover our expenses over 2020-2021, and to end the period with 12 months’ reserves.
To date, we’ve raised $7.66m towards those targets from our existing large donors, and one new large donor.
To close our round, we’re looking to raise $340,000 from our other supporters and new donors. We could also accept commitments to donate before the end of January 2021.
If we raise more than this, we will put it towards increasing our expansion budget over 2021 (the current budget only includes enough to hire 1.5 FTE in 2021), or towards our Dec 2021 target, which we expect will be about $5m.
You can see more details on our funding situation here. The easiest way to donate is through the Effective Altruism Funds platform, which accepts credit cards and bank transfers (and can be directed to send 100% of the money to 80k). If you would like to give over $100,000, we can accept direct bank transfers and donations of assets – just email me about that.
Feel free to email if you have any other questions,
Best,
Ben
