What questions arise for you as you read about the trial and its aftermath? What themes are being reinforced in these chapters? What do we learn about the different characters and how this trial affects the way they view the world? Post one discussion question for each chapter OR respond to another classmates question.

why doesn't scout understand dill's, mr. raymond's, atticus's and jem's feelings of empathy towards tom?

Would a human being's conscience allow them to sentence someone to death even if they believed otherwise? What if racial positions were reversed?

18. Do you think that the main points of the prosecutions case (strangling, beating up) being nearly impossible because of Mr. Robinson's arm will have any impact on the verdict?
20.Mr. Raymond discribes what Dill got upset about in the court room as "the simple hell people give other people-without even thinking". Do you think we have any "simple hells people give other people- without even thinking" in our lives today?

18 What does Atticus's treatment of the witness show about his charcter?
19 What does Dills horror at the way the witness were treated by Mr. Gilmer show about who he is becoming?
20 Raymonds depiction of himself shows who he realy is how does this break his one sided depiction by the rest of the Town

In chapter 21 when Atticus says "There is one way in this country in which all men are created equal-- ... That institution, gentlemen, is a court." Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

Do you think it was Bob Ewell or Tom Robinson that actually raped Mayella?
Judging by Atticus' and Mr. Gilmer's arguments, what do you think the verdict will be?

Dill is characterized as a brave, fearless dare devil, not 1 to get a sick stomach at the sight of Mr. Gilmer's intense prosecution of Tom Robinson. Why was he so shaken, is there an inside story relating to Dill and a particular Negro that we do not know about?
What do you think the verdict will be? Will justice arrive or will the white jury falsely charge Tom?

When Atticus said " if you had been on the jury with 11 other boys like you Tom would be free, so far nothing in your life nothing has interfered in your reasoning process" what did he expect to change Jem's views? Simply life in the south or was there some imparticular aspect?
Why does Aunt Alexandra keep hating on not only blacks but also other folks that just are not like her?
