2020 7th Inning World Series
Twin Falls Titans (109-53, 1st AL East) vs. Vancouver Knights (112-50, 1st NL West)
As the playoff dust settles, it's the top team by record in the AL and the top team by record in the NL that remain standing... These same two clubs squared off in 2017 for the 7th Inning title, with the Titans taking home the crown in the full 7 games. Vancouver hopes to flip that script and follow the example of their NL West rival Jakku Junkers who finally dethroned Twin Falls last year after an epic run of (at least?) 4 titles in a row. The pageantry is hung, the anthems have been played... time to settle in for the first pitch...
Game 1: TF - Jacob deGrom (16-7, 2.57 ERA) vs.
VAN - Kwang Hyun Kim (11-3, 2.84 ERA)
Jose Ramirez opened the scoring in the 1st, drilling a 2-out homer to put the Titans ahead 1-0. Twin Falls threatened again in the 3rd putting runners on the corners with nobody out thanks to a nifty hit-and-run play... and Kevin Plawecki got the job done with a sac fly to make it 2-0. Another base hit put runners at the corners again with 2 down, but Kim got Corey Seager looking to end the threat there. Bottom of 5, the Knights finally broke through against deGrom, as Matt Chapman muscled a long 1-out homer into the left field bleachers, cutting the lead to 2-1. Luis Robert followed with a bloop double to put the tying run in scoring position, but deGrom retired the next two hitters to strand him. The Knights picked up again in the 6th as Juan Soto reached on a lead-off double. But the heart of the Vancouver line-up popped out one after the other to keep the tying run stranded. Bottom of 7, Jean Segura got a hold of a deGrom fastball to lead off the inning, putting one out to tie things up at 2. To the 9th, Corey Seager hit a 1-out gapper to put the go-ahead run on second, and a pair of walks loaded the bases with 2-outs for Cody Bellinger... AJ Minter's control continued to betray him, walking in the go-ahead run. The mound can be a lonely island...
Down a run, Vancouver pulled out all the stops in the bottom of the 9th sending Randy Arozarena out to pinch hit leading off. He reached on a throwing error, then promptly stole second to put the Knights a base hit away from tying it up... But Richard Bleier was ice for the Titans, as he nailed down the next three outs to secure a huge Game 1 victory for Twin Falls.
Cody Bellinger draws an RBI walk in the 9th inning to give Twin Falls the lead.
FINAL: Twin Falls 3, Vancouver 2
Game 2: TF - Sandy Alcantara (9-6, 4.79 ERA) vs. VAN - Tony Gonsolin (13-4, 3.06 ERA)
It was Jose Ramirez who once again got things fired up, lacing an RBI double down the line to put the Titans ahead in the 1st. Paul Goldschmidt then brought Ramirez around on a 2-out single to make it an early 2-0 lead. The Knights got those runs right back in the bottom half as Ian Happ clubbed a 2-run shot. Top of 2, after a 2-out walk to Willson Contreras, Kevin Plawecki drove one to the gap... Contreras was on his horse coming around third... but just missed getting in, with the Knights recording the third out of the inning at the plate. Twin Falls returned the favor in the bottom half, throwing Brett Gardner out at the plate trying to score from 1st on a double. A team needs their biggest stars to shine brightest in the biggest games... and that's just what Juan Soto did leading off the 3rd for Vancouver, belting one out to right to give Vancouver their first lead of the series. The Knights added on another in the 6th as Jean Segura followed a 2-out Tommy La Stella triple with a base hit of his own to make it 4-2. That's all the cushion the bullpen would need as the Twin Falls lineup went quietly the rest of the way. Knights take Game 2 to even things up.
Juan Soto follows through on a go-ahead home run in the 3rd inning putting Vancouver in front.
FINAL: Vancouver 4, Twin Falls 2
All tied up at 1 game a piece as the series shifts to Twin Falls. Attached f-file ready to go for Games 3, 4, and 5... Play-by-play files also attached from Games 1 and 2.
