Does anyone remember/have stories about a Medical Aid man named
Michael Gregg from the 75th division 289th regiment? He was awarded
the Bronze Star for running into a minefield in order to rescue a
soldier who had stepped on a mine. Any information would be greatly
appreciated.

When I saw your inquiry I asked my Dad (Joseph Consiglio) if he
recognized the name Michael Gregg. Dad is now 86 years old and
although his memory has been slipping a bit...he nevertheless
immediately recognized the name and tears came to his eyes as I read
your inquiry. I have a photo he showed me because he wanted to make
sure that he had the right man, and I'd be happy to send it to you if
you can verify that it's the same man. My dad said that he and the
other guys used to call him "Gregg"...and that he was a great
man...strong, well-built....and one of the finest medics he'd ever
known..."the best of the best" is how my Dad described him. He almost
always was very cheerful...good sense of humor, and for the most part
got along very well with most everyone. Dad said he went thru training
with Gregg in Ft Leonard Wood MO, and Ft Breckenridge KY..."Gregg and
I practiced putting bandages on each other..." My Dad was in 289th
Reg, and assigned as medic to Co. D - heavy weapons. He could not
remember to which company Greg was assigned, but he distinctly
remembered seeing him in the big "tent city" in France when the war
ended, and I believe that is where the photo I have was taken. (I
don't see any way of attaching the photo to this post so I will try
sending it directly to your email address). If you can, please verify
whether it is in fact the same man? One more thing....my dad said that
Gregg had a very good buddy, another medic named Noonan...and they
were always together. Hope this helps.

Chris,

You can upload the photo here by clicking on the "PAGES" link in the
column to the right of this page. A new "Page" will open for you that
is formatted like email. You'll see a small icon on the left of the
tools near the top of the page. If you scroll over this it should say
"Upload Photos." Click on it and attach your photo. Hope this helps.

The only way that I know of to compile a roster would be to contact
the United States National Archives and Records Administration
(NARA). You'll want to obtain what are called "Morning Reports" and
"After Action Reports." I'm assuming that the names of Medics would
also be included in these reports. The Morning Reports will list the
names of those sick, transferred, wounded, etc. The After Action
Reports include information about combat movements and actions and may
include the names of some of those involved. I've never, personally
ordered these documents but I do have some from my dad's unit - 290 F
and L. I've heard that there is a specific method for ordering these
documents from NARA, I'm sure they could give you the specifics. You
might also write to the 75th Division Veterans' Association and submit
your inquiry to them by asking that it be published in their monthly
newsletter, "The Bulgebuster." There may be a Veteran member of the
Association who remembers Michael Gregg and could supply more
information to you. I would also suggest that you purchase an
Association Membership Roster from them (I think they are $10.00)
because it will list all current members from the 289th. You might
include a photo of him from the period, if you have one. The address
is: 75th Division Veterans' Association, Attn: James Warmouth,
Secretary. 6545 W. 11th St., Indianapolis, Indiana, 46214. Also, you
might b interested in attending the next Association reunion in
Indianapolis, IN. You can get the registration forms here >

Jay,

You are correct. I've ordered documents from the National Archives in College Park, MD pertaining to the 75th Div, 291st Regt. They can send you an index of documents pertaining to your interest, then you can place the order based on what you find in the index of available material such as After Action Reports, Combat Journals, etc. At least this was the process in 1996 when I placed my order.

Regards,

Steve
