Hey Everyone,

After talking to the organizers of a ton of other groups I noticed
they did 'hack' nights in addition to their regular 'talk' meetings.
I'm considering scheduling one for the fourth Tuesday of every month.

It'd pretty much a be a night where we could get together, work on
some katas, exercises, OSS, personal projects, whatever.

Thoughts?

I'd be interested in this. I've been trying to figure out ways to promote more polygots and a universal hack night might be the way to do it.

FWIW, talking about mixing groups. The Code for Hampton Roads does a weekly Hack Night too.

I thought that project was mostly for working on civic projects? I was thinking people could work on whatever they want. I've attached Kevin to this convo to see if it makes sense.

Yea, I've always considered OSS civic hacking too :)

I agree with Ken: OSS is a civic good.

If you are thinking about doing a hack night then we should think seriously about doing them together. Sure, we don't want "just Ruby" and you don't want "just civic" but I think the upsides far outweigh any down side of mixing. I don't care if people come to civic hack night to work on Facebook games and you don't care if people come to Ruby hack night to work on HRT bus apps. Let's mingle. We're always saying we want to go to each others' meetups but time is too scarce. That most other meetups are not a hack night format has an impact on our ability to get together. If you are thinking hack night that barrier goes away. Space will be a challenge. We'll need more not just because of more people but because it will sometimes be desirable to go to different physical places. We are talking to ECPI about using their space and it looks good. Lots to consider but worth considering.

I'm happy to give this a try but I'd prefer it to be lets work on whatever. I always prefer the KISS philosophy. The simplest thing we have to do is see if this is even worth everyone's time. If we start seeing people show up and twiddle their fingers then I'd propose us having the need for a theme or exercise or structure.

The trifecta: c4hrva + 757rb + hrnug. I like everything about this.

I'd think ECPI, once we (hopefully) get the green light for c4hrva hacknights there, would be the perfect place for this crazy blend of groups for occasional hack nights. We'd have enough space we could break off into hubs of projects. KevinC and I go back and forth on our c4hrva hacknights between the more casual work-on-what-you're-already-working-on-hangout and the more structured specific theme, dataset, etc.  Both have benefits, but one assumption I have is that we may get more takers on this "Liger" of a hacknight if we theme it somehow.

Alright. Lets do this then. We'll announce the weekly hack feasts at our meeting this week. I envision myself only being able to come by every other week as I have toastmasters every other Wednesday as well.

Thanks Guys!
