VA campus on October 2nd. I understand completely about taking care of your

Would it be possible for your unit to provide a color guard for Tailgate with
a Hero on October 2nd? Last year we had a Marine Corps color guard and they
really added a lot to the event atmosphere. We would present colors around
11:30, followed by the pledge of allegiance and national anthem and a few
short announcements.

Detra, Thank you for taking time to meet with me today. I hope some of your
soldiers and their families will be able to join us for our Second Annual
Tailgate With a Hero gathering at the VA Hospital on Saturday, October 2,
2010. If any of your soldiers are interested in attending I would appreciate
a head count sometime in September. As I shared with you, we served 1400
meals last year. By all the information I am getting so far, we expect this
year's gathering to be considerably larger.

Also, to reiterate, we expect nothing from your soldiers but to come and
enjoy a meal. They will have a chance to meet patients at the VA. I can
tell you from my experience last year that they will be touched by all whom
they meet. Moreover, this is a real blessing to the patients. I was
astounded to find out how many of the patients had no family or friends visit
with them. That is "no" as in zero. Our gathering was indeed a blessing.

If any of your soldiers want to also volunteer, we can certainly put them to
work, for example, taking meals up to the rooms of the patients who cannot
come down to visit. Also, if your unit wanted to put up a tent to display
information about your organization and its unique mission, then we would
gladly welcome your participation. On a side note, if your quartermaster has
a large tent to donate for the event I am sure we can put it to good use
also. But, make no mistake. I am not shy about asking for help, but
regardless, your soldiers are most welcomed to come and enjoy a meal with us.
They can bring their families.

Again, it was a pleasure to meet with you. I look forward to working with
you as we move forward with our planning for another successful Tailgate With
A Hero.
