This group has asked us to provide an official rep. We will evaluate this at our HA-CAB (Hou area comm asst board).

SEPARATE from that, they are inviting all area vets/SMs to attend their Vet Day celebration. Please share this with your Houston-based units and Soldiers in case any of them would like to attend.

Subject: RE: A female soldier of 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team

Sir,

Who:  University of Houston-Clear Lake

What:  Annual Veterans Day Celebration

When:  November 11, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. to approximately noon.

Where:  University of Houston-Clear Lake Campus, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX  77058

The event is scheduled to be held in Liberty Park on campus.  If the weather should be inclement, the event will be held in the Bayou Building on campus.  There will be people directing traffic to the parking area and to either location of the event .

Our first Veterans Day Celebration was held on November 11, 2003, with about 100 people in attendance.  Last year our attendance was approximately 400 and this year we expect between 500 and 600 attendees.

Each year we have a currently serving representative from each branch of service attend and they are acknowledged from the podium as representing that entire branch of service.  Actually, if you have a female soldier, perhaps even with some rank, she could serve as both the U.S. Army representative and also represent a currently serving female in the military at the time of the dedication of the eagle.

·        This year we will be having the entire fourth grade from Teague Elementary in the Pasadena ISD sing The National Anthem.  That’s 135 students!  They will be performing another service but that is a surprise.  We would like to especially invite the parents of these students to attend if they are serving in the military.

·        The Army Reserve from Ellington will be bringing an Apache helicopter for a static display.

·        Emmy-nominated Juan Manuel has composed a special song for this event and will be performing it during the program.

·        We will be having a “Fill the Truck” which is  a truck for people to donate their old cell phones so that our troops can call home.

·        The dedication of the eagle to the women veterans and those currently serving in the military.  The eagle will be displayed in the Office of University Advancement (my office suite) along with the Liberty Bell that was dedicated a few years ago and the Blue Star Service Banner.  (We display the Blue Star Service Banner because we feel that everyone in our military who is serving is a family member and needs to be remembered for their service).  Last year we dedicated a gazebo that stands in Liberty Park to the families of our military for their “silent service” to our country because their sacrifices are often forgotten.

·        There will be hot dogs, and other refreshments served at the end of the celebration which normally ends around noon.

These are just a few items on the program for the day and, as you can see, we are all about out military and our veterans.  We have not forgotten you.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Rohde

Cheryl,

Thanks for your e-mail.

We truly appreciate you thinking about us.

As far as inviting our Soldiers, if you can send me a who/what/when/where (with specific times and GPS addresses), I'd be happy to forward it on to our subordinate units so that Soldiers who are interested can have a chance to attend.

As far as an official representative, let me see what I can do.  We have a pretty full operational, training and event calendar these days, but we might be able to support getting the one official rep out to your event.  If we won't for some reason, I'll be able to refer you to another unit that might be in a better position to participate this year.

Tell me more about your event…how many years have you been holding it?  Is it inside, outside?  What is the rough sequence of events?  Is it open to the public?  How many people typically attend?

Sir,

My name is Cheryl Rohde and I am with the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL).  One of my greatest “tasks” is to serve as the coordinator of the annual UHCL Veterans Day Celebration which is held here on our campus every November 11th of each year.  Our event is unique because we not only honor those who are veterans but also those who are currently serving either as active duty or as reservists.  We’d would be very honored to have as many as possible of the 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team attend our celebration at 10:30 a.m. on November 11.

I am also writing to ask your assistance with a portion of our event this year.  We will be dedicating an eagle to women veterans and those currently serving.  At the time of the dedication, we would like to have a currently serving female soldier at the podium along with a female veteran, which happens to be one of the university’s employees and student.  I know that, for privacy reasons, you are not allowed to give me their phone numbers.  But, would you mind giving my phone number, which is below, to one of the ladies who would be willing to serve as a representative of a current female soldier?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me either by e-mail or by phone at the number below.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

A Veteran - whether honorably discharged, active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who,

at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America",

for an amount of "up to and including my life."
