Message to Professor Alan Garber,
President of Harvard University
Greetings of knowledge, culture, achievement, and history,
I extend my greetings to you, and through you to the academics, researchers, and staff at your esteemed university, and to every academic institution that contributes to the service of humanity.
I write to you in my cultural and ethical capacity, and in recognition of your role as the president of one of the most prestigious universities in the world, addressing the conscience of the university and its historic mission before hundreds of thousands of academics worldwide.
I have followed, with concern and dismay, the questioning of some university presidents in Congress. I fundamentally reject that a distinguished scholar or respected academic be interrogated by those who lack a deep understanding of the value of knowledge and the stature of academia. Universities have always been, and must remain, fortresses of knowledge and ethics, and beacons of intellectual freedom. They must not be undermined or reduced under any form of political pressure.
As a free intellectual, I affirm my rejection of any form of cooperation with institutions associated with ethical or humanitarian violations, and I uphold the academic as a living conscience of human society.
Accordingly,
The Executive Council of the Arab Translators Association (ARTA) has decided to honor you with the award of an Honorary Doctorate, a distinction of cultural and ethical significance, in recognition of your position and your leadership of an academic institution with global impact.
I kindly invite you to regard this honor as a global cultural event, and to take pride in it and celebrate it at both the institutional and media levels.
Please accept my highest respect and appreciation,
Amer Al Azem
Thinker and Leader
