A Candlelight at Midnight
Whenever I gaze at the candlelight
in a silent room at midnight,
with its flickering flame float
my thoughts that freely over rupture gloat.
And to Eden sail in a seraphic boat
tied to the crimson pulse of the heart.
And in a fiery trance, my soul sways
like melting wax, and drops in the old happy days,
when, as a boy blessed with glee,
I roamed the fields and felt free
to gaze with wonder at every tree
that drew from me both homage and praise.
And when, as a child of nature, I
was never taught to utter a single sigh
or to shed tears at years bygone
or to shun the bucolic beauty of the sun
which, with love, in my veins run,
and dipped in the deep azure sky.

Istabraq Al Ahmadi, Iraq
My name is Istabraq Rafea Gharkan. I was born in Iraq, in Al Anbar, in 1986. Currently, I live in Kurdistan Region of Iraq/ Erbil because I was forced to leave my city, Ramadi, after ISIS took full control of it. I have MA in English literature from the University of Baghdad/ College of Arts. Studying English literature in general and English poetry in particular both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels played an essential role in helping me find my voice and feel confident of my poetic talent. This sparked my love for writing poetry in English.
