First, you need to figure out what is your goal as a video game
tester. Do you want to become one so you can get your foot in the door
of the game company? Figure out what you want before you dive in.
I highly recommend that you have a college degree. The most desirable
ones are business related, designs, and programming. A college degree
would help you move up in the company faster, and perhaps start you
off in a better position.
If all you want to do is be a video game tester, then a high school
diploma should do the trick. You will start off at a low wage, and
will increase as you show efforts to become a really good video game
tester.
What you really need to qualify:
You must have writing skills. They have to be very clear and concise.
You cannot write, "I think this game is fun." They are not hiring 2nd
graders here. You need to be serious, and you need to write like an
adult. You have to give in-depth details, such as bugs, crashes, etc.
It is not always writing that matters because you will also need
verbal skills. Telephone communication might be necessary from time to
time. If no one understand what you are saying over the phone, you are
going to have a lot of trouble as a video game tester.
You also need some computer literacy. I am talking about things such
as the internet, word processing, and know how to make screen shots of
the game.
