Good Morning
I'm new to this blog and I'm seek the collective knowledge of the group.
I have a 650b wheelset with Pacenti rims ( red sticker, I don't know what generation) It is very difficult to mount tires. I got stuck in a snow storm the other day and I had to call for help. I've already tried Soma tires and Fatty Pumpkin tires. The only thing that I seem to have had success with are Compass tires. The Compass tires are fine for the summer but I need something more substantial for winters in the Northeast.
Is there a trick to mounting tires to these rims ?
Does anyone know a specific tire brand that will work ? Thanks Chuck Hughes Westwood Ma

Sounds like the SL23, IIRC. I had some Pacenti rims that were a real pain to mount anything to. New tires were nearly impossible to mount, but once they had been on a while they were slightly more reasonable. I kept snapping plastic levers until I picked up some of these metal ones: https://ride.lezyne.com/products/1-tl-alloy-v1hd06

Make sure to check the spoke eyelets once in a while, because those rims were known to crack. Pacenti offered a discount/recall to replace those a while back - not sure if that offer still exists though.

Charles-
Those rims were designed for tubeless tape. If you are using normal rim strips or cloth rim tape, you are going to struggle!

All new tires are somewhat "sticky" if you will and don't want to slide over the aluminum. If you don't believe me take a new tire out place the bead against any part of alloy rim, push down hard and try and slide it along.

In the process of mounting a new tire I liberally wipe talc around the inside and outside of the beaded area, allowing some on the sidewall also, that and proper mounting technique works great,,, usually without tire irons.

*In preparation for all of the tire "shaving" I used to do I mounted and unmounted piles of tires (mostly Compass?Rene Herse) onto Pacenti rims,,, most of the time with just a light stretch, talc and no tools.

Another believer in talc here.  A container will last you years.  Don't inhale though!  Could use corn starch also.

My Pacenti Forza Disc rims have almost brought me to tears with how hard it is to get tires on and off. I've tried WTB Horizons and Rene Herse Switchback Hills. Using tubes. Only thing that I've gotten to work are 3 tore levers utilizing ones that can lock into the spokes and rim bead to help hold tire in place.

Chuck! Yes, I’ve also experienced how difficult it is to remove tires on those rims, and that’s with tubeless tape. Both the 700c and 650b versions have given me problems. Talc and good tires levers are the best you can do, IMO.

Last year a friend gave me a vintage Guerciotti. The tires on the wheels were so tight I had to cut through the bead with cable cutters to get them off. To install new tires I used tubeless tape--as has been mentioned above--and a Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack. This tool is inexpensive and a life saver for those really tough tire installations.

Yeah it's a tight combo. For sure use tubeless tape. Almost absolutely necessary. And proper mount procedure, bead in the centre of the well etc. If you have new tires I'd suggest premounting them, the beads will stretch and it helps a lot in the ease of getting them on and off in case of a flat.

The good news is that those rims *will* crack at the eyelets. It's just a matter of time. The Brevets that replaced them are easier to mount tires and the erd is close enough to directly replace them.

I received a discount code from Pacenti just last spring, for two sets of v1 SL23 wheels I had, which hadn't cracked yet. Pacenti offers the code to folks with the v1 rims/wheels, and they don't require the wheels/rims to have cracked. I proactively sent them a couple photos to show the wheels were in my possession.

I used the codes to get 2 new pair of Brevet rims, one 700c and one 650b, which I like. They are a little easier to mount tires on than the v1 SL23.

With the current covid-related parts shortages and such, if you have v1 Pacenti wheelgoods and $ in your budget, you might want to see what they have in stock and snag something useful with the discount even if you don't have immediate needs. 2021 might not be a great year for landing rims/wheels.

Shout-out to Herr Doktor Professor Wiggle-sensei, who I'm guessing is happy he doesn't have to shave 650b tires any more. Happy New Year!
