I bought a pair of 36-hole Velocity Triple V rims from the List of Bay Area Craigs. These rims seem to have a pretty mediocre reputation, although I can't quite figure out why. For 60 bucks, if I get a couple of years out of them, I'll be fine.

Only thing is, I can't find wheelbuilding data for the damned things. 26" / 559, yes. 650B / 27.5 / 584? Nada.

Anybody got the straight dope?

Thanks,
--Shannon

The difference in BSD between 559 & 584 is 584-559=25mm. If you have the ERD for 559 add 25mm. According to Velocity's site the ERD is 560mm.

That's a great tip! Given that 72 double butted spokes and brass nipples, plus washers if they're needed, is a hell of an expensive mistake to be making, I'll have the shop measure the hoops before I order the spokes. Fortunately, Velo Orange isn't so obscure with their hub data, since that's what I'll be using.

Thanks, everybody!

Hi Shannon,

Manufacturer provided ERDs are all over the place and often don't reflect the real measurement you need. Because of this, it's always best practice to measure the ERD yourself. It's a good idea to measure hub dimensions as well.

Here are a few resources for measuring ERD:

Jobst Brandt's The Bicycle Wheel is a classic book about wheels and wheelbuilding.
An excellent modern ebook for wheelbuilding is Roger Musson's Practical Guide to Wheel Building at https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/wheelbuilding/book.php

I can second the suggestion made by Travis about Roger Musson's book.  His ERD measurement method is very useful and doesn't rely on anyone's stated values.
Definitely worth the purchase price in my case.
