in this review of the new Specialized Sequoia the authors mention that a 650B version of the bike will be available in the spring along with a new 48 mm wide tire called the Sawtooth.

With the Compass Switchback Hills, new WTB Horizons, and the upcoming Panaracer Gravelking in 48mm the market will have at least 4 new tires in this size.

Pretty exciting times for 650B fans.

"... the latest thru axle spacing — 100x12mm for the fork and 142x12mm for the rear — which will please some and no doubt have traditionalists bemoaning ever changing industry standards."

The annoying thing about a 12x100 through axle front end on an adventure or bike packing road bike is that (as far as I know) you can't buy a dynamo hub at any price for that format. 15x100 is common enough now for Dynamo hubs. I love through axle, but I can't think of anything that 12x100 gets me that 15x100 wouldn't give me.

I think the Sequoia is setup for internal Dynamo routing. Hopefully there's a hub that'll work!

Shutter Precision's 8X fits a 15mm thru-axle. I believe there is a 15 ---> 12 adapter available.

Right. If it's not available yet, I'm sure they have it in the works.

Maybe I'm missing it, but I don't think I see a dynamo hub on the through axle bike. I see a dynamo on a purple bike with a QR fork and I see a dynamo on the AWOL which is a QR bike. There likely will be a 12x100 dynamo someday and maybe there is some kind of adapter setup to go from 15x100 to 12x100. As of July 11 2016, the only advantage I see in 12x100 is a tiny bit lighter weight, and I see that "benefit" as really small on an adventure touring bike.

William is right. The off-white Sequoia is pictured with Specialized's house wheelset. No dynamo.

One interesting thing about this decision which I do applaud is that it means you will only need one size of spoke. Spoke length is the same for front, rear drive and rear non-drive. That's pretty neat.

the new Rawland Ravn also comes with a 12x100 front hub.  I wonder if they know if a suitable Dynamo hub is in the works?

Has anyone tried the 650 version of this tire?  I'm looking for something road-ish and I think it's either this or the WTB Byway/Horizon.  The 700c version is on my girlfriend's bike and it seems great, but I have no idea about durability.

The WTB tyres actually exist and seem to get good reviews, as do Compass, etc. The 700c Sawtooth is okay but not great. It's heavier than necessary, and could do with more volume, a suppler casing, and at least small side knobs (a la Byway) if any sand might be encountered. The ride isn't particularly smooth. Durability is probably good, but ride not so much. I doubt I'll wear mine out; they've been replaced by 1.95" (actually 47mm on the Sequoia rims) Vee 8(f)/Vee 12(r), which are much better offroad - less shock and more grip, plus they were on closeout.

I'd suggest looking at some of the other options.

Stephen

Gravelking SK 1.9" is available now as well. If you're riding predominately on the road, though, don't discount the SBH.

And then there are two 50mm Clement tyres, Soma's Cazadero, the forthcoming new Compass 42mm BSPs and knobbies, etc, etc. Eurobike and Interbike are coming up in the next two months as well, so I'd expect more new tyres then too - and hopefully more 12mm dynamo hubs, plus lightweight forks with rack mounts and clearance for 57+mm tyres. Maybe Shimano might get around to actually making some of their 9120/8020 STI levers and matching  hydro brake calipers and rotors too, but I won't hold my breath.
