Weigle's Custom Fender Mounting Solutions

Last night I sat down with my new Zepplin fenders, Honjo hardware, and copy of Weigle's fender instructions from Bicycle Quarterly, with the intention of following his lead on installation. But, I totally don't understand some elements of the article. 

As I understand it, the fender stay is tightened against the fender itself, not a cupped washer, by the draw bolts. But, if this is true, I have no idea why the draw bolt and cup washer need to be modified. As long as the hole allows the for the draw bolt to pass through (he suggests 8mm, my Honjo bolts measure in at 7mm), it should work as intended, right? I can see how modifying the cup washer would be good for reducing stress points from the hard edge, but the draw bolt is only really contacting the fender stay, so why would it need to be beveled on the threaded end? 

Am I missing some major element of this installation method?

Taylor,

The slight bevel on the shoulder of the threaded part helps it slip into the cup on the inside of the fender.

 

Trust me, it was difficult to try and convey all the info about a mechanical operation into an article.

 

This is a difficult installation, but done correctly will work very well and be  trouble free for years.

 

Like any fender installation, it is only as good as the installer who does it.

Also worth noting in this thread. Velo-Orange seems to have upgraded their 650b Zeppelin fenders. They now come pre-drilled for two draw bolts in each fender, and the holes are much closer to the end of the fender (~14cm from the end, the front points to the BB on my frame). While I will still modify the mounting, the change has pretty much eliminated the chance of toe overlap, always an issue with VO fenders in the past. But, this means that if you are planning on using the single hole for a light or reflector, you will no longer be able to. Rather, you can simply enlarge the existing holes to use the method referenced in BQ.

Does anyone know if the Berthoud fender stays are available separately?  I assume not, but it's worth asking, they are much lower profile.

As Steve says, they are.  I prefer Berthoud to the other options.  Be careful though, Berthoud fenders are lower profile than Honjo and VO fenders.  Berthoud hardware may not adapt to the fender and bike your are trying to fit.

As others mentioned before, they are. GB even has stays for 60mm fenders separately, which are not mentioned on Peter White's site. You can find all his odds and ends on

Don't know if he ships to the US, though.
