Just finished assembling my new commuter- a 650b conversion from JPW. Rides very nicely and looks great too.

Very nice.

The tail light as pump peg is an exceptionally slick touch.

That's a gorgeous bike, looks like a million bucks!

Very nice. I almost purchased one of these from JP. Great looking bikes, but the forks drive me kinda crazy. Loving the light/pump peg as well.

On a side note, what rd is that? Sun?

In what way?

Lugged frame with non-lugged/angled fork crown. Just aesthetically incongruent to me I guess.

You mean the Cinelli style fork crowns?

Lots of very nice bikes have them, and it's a long stretch to call them "non lugged".

My George Longstaff has one (admittedly, fancied up a bit), and I certainly wouldn't call it "non lugged".

Is that style of crown not original to the Raleigh? Big fan of these
internally lugged forks. My Nishiki Superbe (ONP) has a nice one:

It's what's shown in the catalogs in the Retro Raleighs site, so I
assume yes it's original.

I never quite understood what was wrong with unicrown forks, but in
any event, a fully sloped internally lugged crown shares nothing in
common with them. It was pretty common back then on high end bikes
because it's a slender, elegant crown. Seems to me that crown was the
mark of a high-end frame back when this bike was made. Raleigh
Professionals used the same crown. Cheap bikes of that era always
used "lugged" crowns.

Yes, it's a SunXCD RD.

Yes. I apologize for the choice of terminology. It was all I had in my vocab to describe the general aesthetic appearance.

Again, just personal preference. I like my fork crown like my top tube; flat and with visible connections.

Congrats to the owner. It's beautiful. Forks crown preferences aside, I probably would have purchased a JP Raleigh, but the only frame he had in the shop at the time of inquiry was too big for me and he had no immediate plans for another build.

That fork crown is original for sure. It's one of the reasons Mr Weigle likes the Competition, that style of fork crown gives more fender clearance for the conversion to 650B.

I think he has the next size down in the works right now.

Welcome to the club!

I purchased mine from Peter, he offered me one unpainted with fenders and front rack. I had Ed Litton from the SF Bay Area do the two-tone paint job - which I subliminally chose from the Super Course MkII I bought in 1975, and regretted selling ever since.

I am jealous of your pinstriping!

Mark,

I feel rather comfortable saying yours is crazy beautiful too :).

Aesthetically tho, I too like the lugged fork crown look. I think the Internationals typically came with non-Cinelli style fork crowns, like this one (with birdseye Capella lugs too!)

http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Bicycles_Table/English_Bicycles/Raleigh_Bicycles/Raleigh_Internationall_60/Ral_Int_60_Clean/Ral_Int_C_Full_TQF_1.jpg

I would very much like an International some day :). But considering all the variances in those old Raleighs, in person purchase with calipers and measuring tape, if not a set of wheels and tires too boot, in hand. Make darn sure everything fits before hand :)

Now that I think back - it may well be those lugged fork crowns on the Internationals that keep them from fitting larger tires.

The pinstripes and red in those lugs is just beyond beyond. So beautiful!

Thanks for the compliments!

As far as room for larger tires on an International, your comment about variation in old Raleighs is spot on. I purchased an old International frame and thought about building it up 650b, but comments on this site about 42's probably not fitting stopped me. I built it up as a 700c bike with 33.333s.

Now that I've built up some "inventory" of parts, I decided to strip it down and test fit some 650b Hetres:

The fork clearly has room, the sticking point on Internationals is probably the chainstays. Mine are long, it would seem. I measured 46cm with the wheel in the back of the dropout, c-c axle to bb. Another person I know with one measured 43.5! At any rate, I have 3mm clearance on both sides.

I'll take one last look at it, dry fit some cantilever bosses, etc., but I think this may be my winter project.

Mark, you're hitting something near and dear to me. I, too, am converting an old ('71 in my case) Raleigh International to 650B. Here's a Flickr album: https://flic.kr/s/aHskckDZaU

I get my International in poor shape with all non-original parts, painted over the chrome Nervex lugs. I worked with a near local framebuilder to add fender bosses and mount the a front rack. I just picked it up from him last week and plan to build it soon.

BTW, I see you're in Portland. I'm going to write you offline about that...
