Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever converted a Surly Cross Check to 650b using cantis or v brakes without having to move the posts and if so what brakes would work for such a conversion?

Thanks,

There's no way to have inverse reach on a fixed cantilever bosses. Removable bosses would allow the use of a Promax style adapter and that would work fine. But the Crosscheck has fixed bosses, so no go there. You could use a different fork designed for 650b and run the rear wheel fixed. I have heard of a successful 26" conversion on a Crosscheck using this method.

The canti bosses on a Crosscheck are tig welded so would need cutting off and new ones brazed on if you wanted to move the position. It might not be as expensive as you fear and paint touch up shouldn't be too difficult.

IanA;
Fascinated that these extenders for

 THREADED posts exist, and at a reasonable $30 retail price.  Are there other products from the BMX world that are potential gems like this?

Harry:

Those BMX folk have had to be creative due to multiple standards, I suppose. The Promax brake extender is for a 16mm radius difference, but it's close enough for 650b to 700.  As far as I know, Tioga Powerblock and Maxxis DTH tires started life as BMX tires, before they were made for 559 (26"). Not sure what other of the many innovations BMX has which would readily crossover. I have never been into BMX myself, but certainly appreciate the skill involved in much of the riding.
