Did y'all see the message on www.crustbikes.com?
"Thanks for the six years of support, it has been a ride. Closed until further notice."

Seems very sudden. I hope everyone there is OK.

Thanks to Crust for all the years of sick bikes. I hope you come back stronger than ever, very soon!

Yup, hoping they are ok and are able to have a well-deserved break.

I know they had a ridiculous amount of work with that latest shipment. It’s a way more than a lot for 3 people.

Here’s hoping they just decided to hit the open road until further notice. And (selfishly) that they’ll be back at some point.

Oh dang. I was happy to receive a short quill stem for 31.8 that they were the only one's to carry for a dirt drop conversion. I hope they bounce back and that doing ok? They have a great vibe and cool products. I dreamed of owning a lightning bolt one day.

We like to look at the bicycle business as a bike business. These companies (mostly small) are in it for the love of bicycling. They tend to come out with a strong following, most flame out within a few years when the realities of cash flow and profitability set in.
Then there are the bike businesses. These are market driven, properly capitalized, and have a good chance of being profitable.

This gives me no joy, but that's the reality.

Here in Portland we've lost Velo Cult, Rivelo, and Norther Cycles, all of which were big bike, small business. When the owners are making less than minimum wage, it's difficult to justify continuing.

I don't see the message. Where is it on their site? I just got an email from Matt 5 days ago saying that he expected more Lightning Bolts next June/July.

Mysterious ...

Have you tried to go to their site? Its the only page showing for me? And I have some of them thumbnailed for quick access...they all pop up with this message or won't load at all.

Now the message is showing up. Perhaps I was reading a cached version of the site yesterday.

Not the only ones... the Discord w(Right) stem preceded the Crust one by a number of years, and is still available.  That said, I do hope those cats are ok.

I order a couple items from them earlier this week, and exchanged emails with Matt too. No indication of a problem. Seemed rather sudden; hopefully something tragic didnt happen.

I hope theyre okay, and I sure hope they're filling existing orders, because I just paid them for 2 sets of the new towel rack bars with shallower drop.  anyone gotten a shipped notification on a recent order?

Also, plug for Analog/discord stems.  I've ordered two and they're terrific.  Nice to have options, but if Crust is truly gone, Analog has folks covered with a great product.

Crust is not gone. Cheech posted a "JK SEE YOU IN THE NEW YEAR" on her instagram story.

As I understand they're taking a break for the month of December, fulfilling already placed orders. My Towel Bars shipped post-closure :)

What’s Going on With Crust Bikes?

DECEMBER 6, 2020

If you’ve been to the Crust Bikes website over the past few days, you probably noticed a message that reads:

“Thanks for the six years of support, it has been a ride. Closed until further notice.”

Now, this set the internet into a frenzy. How could the bike company that has been seemingly killing it for those past six years suddenly fold? Well, they didn’t fold. I was waiting on a returned text message from Matt all weekend before I posted anything and my suspicions turned out to be true.

This website helped jettison Crust Bikes. I met Matt in Austin back in 2015 and shot his personal prototype 26+ Evasion. At that time, I was really blown away at how thoughtful everything about the OG Evasion was. I knew Matt was onto something. The brand launched right when the adventure/gravel/touring stuff took off. As expected, Crust Bikes did blow up! Everyone at Crust has been moving so fast that they haven’t had time to figure out what sustainable growth looked like.

Then Covid hit and international supply chains were halted. Fast forward to today, Crust’s stock of frames is low, and thus, Matt’s emails have gone through the roof. While they’re waiting on new frames to be delivered in 2021, Matt and Cheech, and the entire team are using this downtime to restructure their business, rebuild their website, and figure out how to grow and operate more sustainably.

It sucks to suddenly see their site with that message but please just know, they’re not going anywhere. They all just need some time off and some space. Please respect this moment in time and don’t reach out to them. Let them work and recover in peace. If you want to pour out some emotion in the comments here and just let them know how much Crust Bikes means to you, you’re totally free to do that, just don’t send Matt another email. ;-)

Comment: Where does ‘jettison’ mean anything but throw away as excess?

Well, they could have just put that on their website.

Harry P Travis asked:

"    Where does ‘jettison’ mean anything but throw away as excess? "

Nowhere.  The Radivist article says "launched', not "jettisoned".  If you cut and pasted something earlier, then the author found the error and corrected it.

If I wanted to receive fewer emails, that's probably the last thing I would post on my website. Kooks.

Agreed - with everything that's going on, I think they would have gotten many well wishes for a well-deserved break.  I was within a hair's breadth of ordering a canti-LB this summer until a used NFE came up.  This isn't the right kind of internet-buzz.

Some say there ain't no such thing as bad press. I get the feeling
we're talking about them a whole lot more than if they had done what
the majority here would have liked that they had done.

Earlier in the thread I expressed alarm that I'd ordered before their shutdown or break, but not received a shipment notification. I have since received a shipment notification, so they're definitely filling orders!

I really hope they're able to recharge and figure out how to make things work, because Crust is among the few non-custom builders that seem really interesting and exciting, along with Riv, Black Mountain Cycles, and a few others.
