Those are VO rings on 49d but I use the TA rings for 9 speed currently and have used them 10s in the past. Works good for me, has worked well for others.

That's not necessarily true. I've gotten much better at it but setting up 16t front shifts using old school 50.4 or 86 or 110/74 or whatever bcd cranks hopping more teeth than the fd was designed for, using smaller rings then designed for, with brifters - takes patience, fiddling and chin scratching. But I've managed to make it work quite well. Two click with the right hand and just the right timing with the left and I don't really need to let much off the gas.
