Compatibility of Stronglight 49d (with new Pro Vis rings) and Shimano 10 drivetrain

New project is a 650b conversion involving a 1973 Raleigh Competition frame.  I want to run Shimano 10 speed shifters, chain, and cassette, and would like to use a classic crank like the 49D for the compact gearing.

I'm concerned about the narrow chain with this crank.  I seem to recall that the chainring spacers may be too wide.

Anyone have any experience with this set up? Tips?

Those are VO rings on 49d but I use the TA rings for 9 speed currently and have used them 10s in the past. Works good for me, has worked well for others.

The external width of 10- or 11-speed chains is about 2mm less than the 5/6-speed chains that these cranks/rings/spacers were originally designed for. I've used the Cyclotouriste chainrings with both 10- and 11-speed chains by replacing the standard spacers with M7 stainless steel washers stacked to provide 3mm of spacing - either three or four washers depending on whether their thickness is 1mm or 0.75mm. If you can't find metric washers then 9/32" is a very close match.

I found that if I used the standard spacers with a narrow chain, the chain would sometimes skate between the chainrings and refuse to catch when changing down to the small chainring.

Definitely possible as I spoke with Max at the Alex Singer stand after PBP 2015, who had ridden it on a bike with Campag 11 speed, TA crankset excepted. I didn't think to ask about chainwheel spacers, but the previous post makes a lot of sense.

Great thanks.  I'll give this a try.  Mixing and matching old and new drivetrain parts isn't the path to sanity.

Lower your front shifting expectations and all is well :).

That's not necessarily true. I've gotten much better at it but setting up 16t front shifts using old school 50.4 or 86 or 110/74 or whatever bcd cranks hopping more teeth than the fd was designed for, using smaller rings then designed for, with brifters - takes patience, fiddling and chin scratching. But I've managed to make it work quite well. Two click with the right hand and just the right timing with the left and I don't really need to let much off the gas.

Dear Robert,

You'll want the narrower spacers (2.9 mm if I recall the correct spacing). TA sold them as part of their CX setup for the single-ring chainring guard. Mike Kone had some made up and sold them for a spell as well, but they're no longer on his menu of items, but he may have some lying around if you contact him. Building up 3.0mm of spacer width from small washers would obviously work as well. Don't go wider than about 3.1mm or you may start having issues with 10/11s chains skating between rings.

I wonder if one of the 3D fast prototype outfits would be a good way to get five of these? Sure, they'd be very expensive chainring spacers, but you'd only have to buy them once. 
Or make some extra to sell to the list, ibobs, CRers (anachronistic CRers I mean) and keep some as spares.

It'd be easy as cake to whip up a 3D CAD model of a bash guard and send it off to a CNC shop, and you're correct, it would be really expensive unless you did a batch run of 30-50. And of course, the more, the cheaper. But then the issue is that it's not one-size-fits-all.  You need to have them in multiple sizes to work with different size chainrings, and you might also want a couple of bolt diameter variants.

If there were considerable demand for one size and bolt pattern, I'd consider doing a run.

No reason to go to that effort, Wheels Manufacturing sells multiple thicknesses of chainring spacers, including 3mm. http://wheelsmfg.com/products/crank-pedal-parts/chainring-spacers.html

Update:  The Wheels Mfg. 3.0 chainring spacers recommended above by Greg in Seattle appear to work--at least on the stand.  Too cold out here in MI for a road test, but on the stand the shifts are fine, and no slippage of chain between the rings.

Drive train:  

Stronglight 49d with TA Pro vis rings: 46/30
SRAM 10 speed cassette and 10 spd chain
Ultegra long cage rear derailleur
105 10 speed brifters
Shimano FD-CX70 front derailleur

All this on a 1973 Raleigh Competition frame, cold set to 130 rear spacing.

More to come as I finish the build.  Next up: Pacenti SL23 rims mated to Shimano 10 speed cassette hub and Grand Bois 650 x 42 tires.
