Just looked at the website - no sign of them. Are they extinct already?

If so, discs are looking better...

I don't actually know, but I feel like it's the opposite.  They didn't make it to the site in the first place but are available if you contact them.

The Wayback Machine isn't yielding any hits on their site. However a quick google search shows Compass sells them in 28/32 for $98

Three months ago, on this list, Kirk said this...

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/650b/-FJ7_Mo01X8

Dear 650b'ers,

They aren't on the web site right now, but our new Brevet rim is in stock and shipping now.

The Brevet is available in silver and 650b only (for now) in 28h, 32h and 36h drillings, $98.00 each, plus shipping.

Give us a call and we'll get your pair shipped today.

Cheers,

I also don't believe they ever made it to the site. As others pointed out, they can be purchased directly through Kirk. I received mine quickly and they laced up very nice. I mounted 38c Pari-Motos easily and have been a joy to ride on.

Nope.

Bought mine from Compass.

Kirk must be too embarrassed to acknowledge the 650b rim brake historical reenactment crowd on his website.
Either that or Compass has exclusive rights to the distribution going forward.

650B bikes with rim brakes are not "historical reenactment." That's
Eroica & Classic Rendezvous.

Cant speak to any sort of lock-down Compass might have on distro. Back Alley Bike Repair, in Seattle, has been stocking them since the beginning, and has gone thru more than a dozen.

They are stunning visually and build up very nicely. The details and spec really add up. Waiting to see what the usable lifespan is. Hope to see more life than other early versions of some other models (SL23 V.1)

My LBS has used them. I imagine it may be an issue of current supply not being much greater than distributor demand so it's not necessary or prudent to sell them via the website. Just a theory.

All one has to do is call. You'll talk to a pleasant and helpful human. 423-531-6135

Stephen,

We have hundreds of them in stock in 28h, 32h and 36h.

We'll have a new website up and running in about 6 weeks.

In the mean time, just email or call (my cel) with an order.

Best regards,

Brevet rims are available from Pacenti,,, yes!

I purchased these from Kirk direct and they're all built up now.
These rims are handsome and my builder says they are a pleasure to build.

Thanks everyone. I'm not in the USA so getting hold of things can be complicated, especially when there's no online source. The rims are not available here, and that probably won't change according to the local agent; rims are bulky and thus not so easy or cheap to ship (or store) plus everything is tending towards discs anyway. :-(

I think they look great, and am considering them for an upcoming build. But honestly, it comes down to aesthetics alone- modern designs build into a stronger wheel.

True, but just sometimes " as in a fancy 9 mm auto " vs a good olde fashion 1911 45 Acp .. Wide box double wall rims . Take a hit or give one- get you home or are field whack able  to do so- weird wide tires stay on a bit better.. An so yes I've done the whole it must look like a Mavic MA-40 in brush nickel . But I've done things to them over the years (20 plus) that keep it's type still in the fight. Cheers Allan

FYI everyone - to those interested, I asked Kirk if there is a 700c version of the Brevet, and he said he is planning to release one later in the year.

that't good news.  There isn't much out there for 700C rim brake tubeless compatible rims.

Does anyone know if these are close enough in ERD to be a straight swap for PL23s under most circumstances?

I asked this a while back and the answer I got was yes. I think the required spoke length was within a millimeter of that for the PL23, but am not certain of that. Since they're meant to be both stronger and easier to fit tyres too I'd like to do the swap.

*bump*

I was just on the Pacenti site today and there is now a page for the 700C Brevet rims:  https://pacenticycledesign.com/products/brevet-rim-650b

At first I figured it was a typo (note that the URL itself says "650b"), but the text mentions 700C several times, and has a plausible ERD of 611mm.  And there is a separate page for 650B Brevets that is more definitely 650B:  https://pacenticycledesign.com/collections/rims/products/brevet-rim-650b-1

Cheers,

They are also available from Compass, may save on shipping if you are getting tires as well. I wish the Forza was available in 650B: stiffer design, offset drilling, tubeless ready.

So do I!  I would back up the truck and convert another of my 700C bikes, along with laying in a few of the offset-drilled ones.  The 700C Forza has a 2mm smaller ERD than the SL23, so one could probably re-rim old SL23 wheels provided the spokes weren't *just* long enough for those.

Your mention of offset-drilled rims got my heart racing! As much as I love the Brevet rims, I would love them even more if they came with an offset rear rim.

With modern hubs designed for 11 cogs, the tension imbalance can be extreme. That's an issue with any center-drilled rim, not unique to the lovely Brevets. I've taken to using thicker drive-side spokes to equalize the strain (elongation). An offset spoke bed would help even more.

The Forza Disc version is available in 650B offset drilling. Maybe I should buy a few of those and just use them with rim brakes. I would have probably used A23's instead of Brevet for my last set if it weren't for the reported issues with tubeless fit. OTOH, the wheelset was never intended to be used tubeless, so not sure why I bothered.

Your post made me curious if the Forza disc was just a non-machined version of the same extrusion (which would suit me just fine!), but I think it's not:  "Without the constraints of a braking surface the 27.5 disc rim comes in a few grams lighter."

I wonder what the ultimate difference in sidewall thickness is between the two version, though.  Maybe you could get away with that sort of off-label use if you're primarily a front-braker and don't mind checking/re-rimming rear wheels on a regular basis.
