I'm curious if anyone out there has built up a new Canti Lightning Bolt from the latest batch. Would love to see pictures. I ordered a medium. Received it, took some measurements and promptly decided to return it and order a large. I am 5'9" (PBH 87).

I've been collecting parts. How are the builds going for you?

I should mention that I did see hperickson's build. In fact, his build primarily prompted me to go for the size large.

Lowkey_turd did the same with the with V1 (V2?) Cantibolt and his L build looked a ton better than the M. Don't know his PBH but it's got to be similar looking at saddle height.

randall,

Good to know. I'm getting the large frame on Friday, but unfortunately, It is going to be awhile before I can build it up. I ordered a wheelset from Pro Wheel Builder, and they are about a month out on wheel builds.

Another new Crust LB owner here.  My saddle height is 72-74 depending on season, footwear, pedals. Went with a large no question. I like frames on the bigger side in any case, fistful of post on level top tube bikes. (I'm a bit over  5'10"these days).  I'd rather have that than a gangly quill stem to keep my bars close to level.

I wasn't necessarily thrilled with the color when ordering, but I figured it would be nicer in person. The deep sparkle is subtle but definitely coo-looking when the sun hits it right.

I've got my Pacenti Brevets sitting here as well,  and a nice Suzue high flange rear hub, will do an SP dynamo up front. I was going to go with some old Shimano low profile cantis but now I'm thinking 90mm mini Vs.

Crank I will either pull something out of the parts box or off another bike, or maybe splurge on something new. For the last couple years I have really been loving triples. They make a lot of sense here in the Hudson Valley, especially since I generally only have 7 or 8 on the cassette. If I were to put 9-10 on (the Suzue is an 11-sp) I might consider a new double., I was looking at the Sun XCD as a possibility, though it is right up there with the Rene Herse in price. It does have the advantage of non-proprietary ring bcds. A potential drawback for some is the high Q factor, but that doesn't seem to bother me. Anybody have experience with this crank?

I will probably take the opportunity to buy a new set of platform pedals==unless something really jumps out, I may get a second pair of VO Sabots. The rest I will  dive into the parts box and see what works for now--stem, bars, saddle, seatpost; likely Suntour bar ends with a vintage long cage derailleur.Tires I'm planning on RH 48mm knobbies (I've been lead to believe the 90mm mini v's will clear this width).

I may finally get some kind of rack/decauler setup to run the handlebar bag I bought years ago from an IBob who makes them (Dave P?).

I start working at a bike shop next week, so I am waiting until then for any parts I need, including spokes, pedals, brakes, etc. to take advantage of my employee discount. I hope to be underway with the build in the next few weeks, possibly finished by early May for Farmer's Daughter. It will be my fattest drop bar bike by 10mm or so, which could come in handy if the springtime course is at all muddy up there.

Mark,

That looks like a sweet build. Like you, I wasn't crazy about the color, so I was pleasantly surprised that the sparkle is pretty subtle.

My build:
New Parts:
Pacenti Brevet rims, Son widebody deluxe fh, White Industries T11 rh
RH 650 x 48 tires
Velo Orange Grand Cru double crank 46 x 30
RH rando bars
RH front rack

Old parts:
Paul Neo Canti brakes
Chris King 2 Nut headset
Nitto 65 seatpost
Brooks C17 saddle
XT rear derailleur
Found a brand new LX 11-32 rear cassette in my parts bin
Rivendell Silver downtube shifters
Shimano Tiagra aero levers
Nitto stem
Crank Bros Candy pedals

I still have a few things to acquire (front bag, light, fenders, FD) but they may come down the road. Here in western Colorado I rarely have a need for fenders, but bikes like this don't look right to me without them.

Just something to keep in mind… I’m pretty sure that bike won’t fit fenders with those 48s .

Sounds like a sick build .

Dane,

Thanks for the heads up. My plan is to use the 48s over the summer. Around September when we start to get some inclement weather, I'll swap to 42s and install fenders.

Looking forward to seeing your builds!

Mark, I run SunXCD cranks on my Elephant (40/26 10S) and Road+ (38T 11S). I am happy with the cranks and prefer their wider Q over the RH. With the double, the shift from small to big demands unloading and patience. RH with ramps and pins shifts better.

I have a RH 44/30 no ramps no pins 171mm crankset here if you are interested... Also a 28T inner.

If he is not interested and the chainrings are in good shape and you’d want to part with them separately, I’d possibly be interested in the 44t and 28t.

Sounds good on the inclement weather swap.  I haven’t taken the fenders off my new rando bike yet but am wanting to try some 48s and no fenders for the trails.

I'm still waiting on a wheel set, but I received the large frame on Friday, went to my buddy's bike shop this morning and had him install my headset. Then I transferred the bottom bracket spindle to top of saddle measurement from my current bike to the Lightning Bolt. I think the large is going to be perfect. Can't wait for the rest of my parts.

Measuring from the center of the bottom bracket shell, along the seat tube, to the top of the saddle is 77cm.

My saddle, at 73-74, will be 3-4cm lower, definitely a "French fit", which will be made to look more so by the couple of cm of seat tube extension. Kinda wish that wasn't there, but it of course won't affect anything other that aesthetics, and it matches up almost exactly with my BG Hikari, my current main mixed use gravelly what have you bike. (To think I used to race on a 55cm Kellog Spectrum with a 13 (14?) cm Salsa stem and a wayback seat post. Crazy)

Mark, yes. I have been rereading Jan Heine's review of the Lightning Bolt (BQ No. 70), and he has just a few inches of seatpost showing. On the bright side, his riding partner Mark claims that the Crust rode nearly identically to his own Curt Goodrich custom.

I've run into a few building snags. I put a Rene Herse rear brake cable hanger into the seatpost clamp and it jams against the back of the seatpost, to the point where I can't insert the post. I may need to do some filing. Also, I'm not sure how the Rene Herse M13 wide rack is supposed to mount into the brake posts with my Paul Neo Canti brakes. the supplied bolts won't thread into the Paul spring nuts. I have a set of Paul rack attachment bolts, but they push the rack too far away from the fork to keep the rack flat. I may try to get someone at RH on the phone tomorrow to see if they have any suggestions.

That style of seat post clamp creates challenges for hanging a loop over cable hanger.  On one frame ended up  putting two p clamps on the seat stays and bolting them together through the cable hanger,

Brad,

Thanks for the tip. I read elsewhere that someone was having the same problem and found that a Salsa hanger worked. It sounds like it still scored the seatpost, but it fit. My seatpost is already pretty scratched up from being swapped across various bikes, etc. so I'm not worried about a little more marring.

This was also an issue in the V1 LB. What I know for sure works with the
V1 is a Surly hanger with the loop the passes over the over the seat
bolt gently flattened with a hammer over a round piece of metal, or
carefully filing down the threads on the seat bolt at that specific spot
(they don't do anything there anyway). It didn't take much to get the
hanger to swing free.

It seems weird to me that a model with "Cantilever" attached to the name has this issue in V2.  It would be nice to have a permanent hanger on the frame, but I get that some people (perhaps myself at this point) will run this with v brakes. But so what. I won't be using the fender eyelets, or some of the rack points, or the third set of water bottle bosses.

Oh well. I just rummaged through a small parts box and found a Surly hanger still in the package. I was meanwhile scheming up something that would attach at the bridge fender mount and head up from there.

Seems I did not have to file the surly hanger on my v1. But my single speed Lightning Bolt had the same issue and I ended up going with a Paul Funky Monkey.

I've been reading through the threads and thinking of pushing the buy button on a Lightning Bolt.  One question is on tire sizing.  The Crust site recently update and looks like there is incomplete sentences in the description.  Just to confirm, 42cm with fenders and 48cm w/o fenders? 48cm also with a knobby like the Juniper Ridge? Thanks.

I just received mine yesterday but haven't built the wheels yet. From the old description, it definitely sounded like 650b x 48 without fenders would fit, so I was hoping to use a Juniper Ridge knobby. That new wording makes me worried that it might be too tight though.

FWIW, it does fit the Rat Trap Pass 26 x 2.3 as long as you don't need brakes.

It's been awhile, but I finally received my wheelset after the long wait on White Industries T11 rear hub. So here's the final result. I'm very happy I switched out a medium for a large. Running RH 650 x 48s and they fit great. IMG_6104.jpgIMG_6106.jpgThanks for all of the tips on the build.

Those Switchback Hill tires are awesome.  I have them on my Alchemy eRonin.

I have a set of the Switchback on my Clem Smith Jr. Might seem weird, but the bike got used a lot, so why not put good tires on. Although I recently left the job, I commuted for a couple of years from Beacon to Newburgh, with city streets and about 2 miles of gravel path on the way home, plus grocery runs and tootling around town, zero flats. And these are ELs.

IMG_20210713_171718707.jpg

I think there was another thread about the knobbies being the same overall diameter as the file tread, so Junipers would fit. The only issue there is that the tire is designed for muddy conditions, so you want some extra clearance if possible.

Meanwhile, trying to build my wheels, OBP does not have any DT Competition spokes in stock. Found some yesterday for what I thought was a good price at wheelbuildingparts.com so hopefully they will be arriving soon. And I've since come across a couple of fun 26" bikes that I am setting up as knobby-tired all road bikes, so I might go with some Baby Shoes on the LB for the initial build.

Going with a high-flange look and Pacenti Brevets, silver spokes with black brass nipples.
