Hey 650b listers

I'm looking at either the WTB Horizon or Schwalbe G-one Speed for my next build. Does anyone have the 584x50mm G-one Speed mounted and able to give actual width measurement?

Anyone out there have a clear preference?

Hello Erich,
I had some 584x50 G One speeds and they measure a little small- 48mm on 20mm internal rims. I liked how they road very much, but showed wear pretty quickly. I have some Horizons that I have not ridden much- bought them used and they look bigger than the G Ones. They look and feel much more durable than the Scwalbes.

I had the 50-584 Classic Skin Speeds touring in 2019. They came in at ~48mm on i23 rims, wore fast, punctured lots, and lost air very rapidly; they needed inflating every day, two at the very outside. They rolled well, but were a PITA otherwise. Horizons are supposed to be much more durable, while the Speeds probably wouldn't have made it past about 1500km. :-(

Horizons measured out at 46 (!) for me on 25 ID rims, the tread seemed like they would last a while, its pretty thick. I wasn't a huge fan of how they felt, but that's probably because I was coming from 32s!

If going tubeless and you have the budget, the SBHs are still the gold standard for 650x48 slicks (not what you asked, I know!)

Cheers,

Thanks for all the advice, group. I ended up going with the WTBs for now. I may move to the SBH eventually but figured I should try out the inexpensive long-lasting option first.

I have some resevations about the Compass tires - mainly fragility and reported higher maintenance required for tubeless. I really want blackwall tires and that would be extralight casing only for the SBH, and I don't think that's the best idea for me.
