After 20+ years in the ‘normal’ bike shop world, James and Candice decided to start Analog Cycles.  It’s an alternative bike shop: completely off the grid, tucked in the middle of a maple grove, building bikes that require no electronic shifting, spandex, or special shoes.

The shop is close to East Poultney, Vermont and it’s 200 year old village green.  The village is nestled within a network of dirt roads, close to a budding mountain bike trail system.  The quickly growing trail network features hundreds of acres of flowy mountain bike trails. Within the rough hewn walls of a sugar house turned bike shop, you’ll find useful products for exploring dirt roads, touring and camping.  The emphasis is on well made, durable and repairable bikes, parts and accessories. Archival materials are used where possible. Waxed cotton rather than nylon fabrics. Leather in place of foam. Steel framed bicycles, not carbon fiber.

Analog builds smart, reliable touring and adventure bikes.  We specialize in bikes that are as easy to ride as they are to maintain. Unlike most contemporary bikes, our bikes are built with the end user in mind as both rider and field mechanic. Bikes go out the door with a mix of new and old technology: friction shifting paired with clutch derailleurs, traditional handbuilt wheels set up tubeless, ultra wide range gearing, generator hubs that power lights and simultaneously charge a phone while you ride.  Folks come to us from all over the world for advice on fitting and custom builds. We’ve been lucky enough to ship bikes and esoteric parts to England, Sweden, Norway, German, Japan, Australia, Canada as well as across the US.

In our tiny shop, you’ll find a wide range of bikes and frames from Rivendell, Crust, and Velo Orange.  We stock generator lights from Busch and Muller, Schmidt and Sinewave, and hubs from Bitex, White Industries, Schmidt and Shutter Precision.  Compass tires in the bigger sizes are stacked next to WTB tires and Schwalbe’s gravel offerings. We keep an assortment of Nitto racks, bars, stems and seatposts, Crust stems, our own Analog (w)Right stems, bars from Salsa, lots of Brooks and select Fizik saddles.

Analog offers a number of different services:

  • Online and in-person ‘Enlightened Fitting’

  • 650b Conversions

  • Practical wheelbuilds designed for you, not some generic industry standard

  • Full or partial custom bike builds.

  • Generator set ups for back country exploration.

  • Reimagined bike builds, in which we take an older frame you provide and help you make it useful for the kind of riding you do, now.

  • In Depth Tune and Overhaul work, specializing in bearing upgrades and long term preservation of the bike.

You can take the train, fly, drive or ride to come see us.  Let us know where you are coming from, and we can help figure out the best option for you.  There is camping down the road at Lake St. Catherine State Park (a 15 minute bike ride away) or at one of the nearby B&B’s several of which are only 2 miles away. Come hang out, get help with a fit, or chat with us about a bike build.  We’d love to see ya!

"Guys" is the wrong word. Not my intention to make it a male thing and leave Candice out. My best and hope to patronize in future.

Congrats! I appreciate your vision, and wish you the greatest success.

Your amazing hospitality to me during my visits to Frederick have remained firmly within me. So, even though I'm between projects at the moment, I know I'll reach out to collaborate with you somehow on my next one. I'm also seeking a reason to be in your geography. It certainly sounds like you have all the right reasons to travel.

Best wishes from Texas!

Chris,

In addition to Analog, let me highly recommend the xVT Bikepacking Route as one reason to visit VT. I rode a small section of it for four days last July, and I’m going back for a week this summer. Beautiful, nearly traffic-less dirt roads and some very nice double track and forest road sections, too. Here’s a link for some info:

The beer isn’t a bad second reason—if you drink beer, that is. I had about 30 beers shoved into my framebag on the train ride home to Baltimore last year. All stuff you can’t get anywhere outside of VT.

Bob...wow!...what a wonderful resource, thanks!

As the Texas heat lingers on into second and third summer, things will start to cool up in Vermont.  And that is when I'll be seeking just this kind of escape.

Visited them today just to "look around" from my home in upstate NY. Drove by their sign twice (my fault I can't see). Their place sits back off the road so you do need to look for it. Once I got there I found James & Candice to be very friendly, helpful and accommodating. They are just getting started so they don't have full stock yet but it's coming. They are a niche shop; not at all like most that try to follow all the latest trends.  Too many current shops give an attitude or are just corporate showrooms for Trek, Specialized, etc. I hope they succeed and look forward to doing business with them in the future.

Cool! I'm leaving the heat of the Midwest for Vermont this afternoon. I'll try to stop in and check it out.

Have some family coming in from outta town this Friday, we're closed, but almost any other time is good.  Give a shout when you are in the area:  802 287 0999.  Best,  James   Co-Owner, Analog Cycles

Hi Ken, here's a quick(ish) run down on enlightened fitting:  https://www.analogcycles.com/bike-fitting/

Basically, it's fit based on comfort and touch points, not power, watts, pro positions, etc.  I did traditional fitting for years and years in a normal bike shop, and saw many many issues caused by bad fits or folks subscribing to an ideal, not to what they actually need to be happy on bike.  Enlightened fitting is my attempt to remedy those pitfalls.

Wishing you the best and that you were local! The bike fitting looks to be a superb service and one that I would take up except for being so far away.
