Does anyone have experience with these rims for 50-60mm tires or other rims that are a bit wider than the Pacenti Brevet.

It seems like a bit wider rim suits wider tires and low pressure tires.

I’ve used Mavic MA-2 and MA-40 for mountain bikes and I know they work fine but if starting from scratch it seems like a bit wider rim is prudent.

Thank you
Ray

Inner width of an MA-40 is about 14 mm.

Thanks Ken,
So the Pacenti Brevet is 19mm internal and the Velocity Quill is 21mm internal.

I’m looking at the Quill for 50-60mm tires.
Roads, fire roads, trails.....not for rocky single track.

Any experience with them?

I don’t think I need anything like the Cliffhanger.
Any input?

Thank you
Ray

Velocity has a 'optimal' tire width specified for some of their rims.

A23:  23mm - 35mm tires

Quill25mm - 47mm tires (rim is 21 mm internal width)

Atlas: 28mm - 45mm tires (rim is 21 mm internal width)

Cliffhanger: 45mm - 65mm tires (25mm internal/30mm external rim width)

Having posted that, I have a Schwalbe G-One 70-584 (2.80) on an Atlas (with tube). So I'm exceeding Velocity's recommended max by 25mm. No problems in casual riding at 20 psi. (But, I am very light.)
Brake pad positioning is critical with narrower rims, though!

Currently running 48 mm tires on Quills. Wouldn’t hesitate to go wider if the frame allowed.  As David L points out, brake pad positioning can be tricky with wide tires on narrow rims, especially with cantilever brakes, since the arc of the pad is downward as the pad moves toward the tire.

Ray, not sure if wide enough but I am running 48mm tires on the Velocity Atlas.

My disclaimer: I have new highly polished 36h A23 rims for sale

My observation: At least one hard core hard riding adventure bike reviewer noting that the wide- rim rage may be out of hand, what with added fragility of unsupported rim edges.

Observation 2 : What does the 115% rule of “aerodynamically optimal ratio “ for peloton riders @25-30mph have to do with almost all riding on 650b tires or any tire larger than 32mm?

David, are those inner widths or outer widths?

Ok, sorry, I see the numbers now, was reading too fast!!!  Thanks a million for giving useful information!

So, I just got a pair of 559 x 1.75”, which is 44.5 mm but I haven’t installed them.  The Velocity chart says I should use 21 mm internal width.

Not to derail too far from original post but how is anyone’s experience with the quills? Good rim? Good tire fit situations?

Dan - hopefully you get some feedback here too, but my best suggestion is to try and get on the Groups website and do a search for quill. It’s come up a few times - specifically I asked about them a year or two ago for advice on a wheel build (went with Pacenti Brevet- mostly due to cost) and Quill opinion was very favorable and included some shop wheel builders  too (rather than just weekend warriors). I believe there were some previous discussions as well. Good luck!

Hi gang.

The Quill is easily one of the best MSW rims out there today. Quality is excellent and they build up easily. I have thousands of miles on a set now and they have seen some serious gravel grinding abuse. 700c version is great as well. I really like the matte silver finish.
