Hi folks,
Up for sale is a size medium Elephant National Forest Explorer (NFE).
I purchased the frame new in 2017, built it up, and have been riding it ever since. I've ridden it both in drop bar and swept back/upright configurations, toured on it from Oregon through California, taken it on numerous backcountry overnights and bike packing trips, and it has been my go-to gravel bike for weekend rides. This is a very capable and fun bike. It has been very well loved and ridden hard. My riding has changed due to health reasons, and it's time to pass it on—it will be missed.

I am 5'10" and probably fall in the middle of the spectrum for the size. Full geometry can be found here.
The NFE is designed as a low-trail bike, intended to carry a load over the front wheel. For most of the last five years I have ridden with its original low-trail fork, but for the past year have ridden it with a SOMA Wolverine lugged mid-trail fork because I was riding much more commonly without a load. I am selling the bike with BOTH the NFE low-trail fork, and the SOMA fork which is currently on the bike.
Full-ish build list here. Photos here. Note that the photos with the yellow handlebar tape are the current build. Photos above with yellow bar tape are what comes with the sale, ALONG WITH the NFE fork.
Components and build in brief:
The bike is built up in its classic form, with a Shutter Precision dynamo hub powering front and back lights, including a premium SON Edelux up front. The front rack is custom built for the NFE by Haulin' Colin. The front luggage is a Swift Industries (from MUSA days) XL Ozette designed for the rack. Mark Guglielmana built a custom decaleur for it. Drive train is Shimano 105 10-speed paired to a White Industries VBC crank, and mechanical disc brakes. The wheels included in this sale are bomb-proof 26" Velocity Cliffhangers with 2.2" Continental Speed Kings set up tubeless. I have a WTB i23 650B dynamo wheel set that could be swapped for a little more money, or sold in addition at a very reasonable price. I ran both wheel sets for the bike, reserving the 26 mainly for knobbies and 650B for slicks/gravel tires.
Condition:
The cosmetic shape is consistent with what one would expect from a bike that has been ridden on the road, gravel, and dirt but never abused. There are scratches on components, and paint overall is in fair/good condition. There are scratches to decals, and small chips to the paint on the rear stays and fork. There are no dents and no dings to the fork or frame, and it's never seen an accident or major crash. There are two notable areas where the paint has been rubbed off. One is on the head tube due to cable rub, and the second area is under the down tube due to the use of a crappy car-mounted bike rack on one trip.
The only issue/weirdness with the bike involves the head tube. I had the headset replaced 18 months ago, and discovered that the star nut had slipped at some point, which led to an oval-ization of the head tube on the frame. A professional mechanic removed the old head set and shimmed the new one. They assured me that they have done this numerous times to steel bikes. I have ridden this way for the last year and a half without any issue, and it doesn't effect the handling. I wouldn't know unless they had told me.
Full cost new for everything puts this build at about $4,600. I'm asking $2,600. Will ship at buyers expense, though local sale in Portland, OR strongly preferred. I would also consider a sale without the rack, lights, and Swift bag.
Here for questions! Thanks,
Jordan in Portland, OR
