And a 1" threaded steerer ... ftw (!) Great frame and fork / great price ...

This frameset would be a very good drop-in replacement for a Rawland Stag, would it not?  So anybody lamenting they never got a Rawland Stag would probably do well with this.  This frameset could even be considered a pretty good substitute for a Norther-Lyon, which also takes 650x48 without fenders.  Not that I'd want to give away my Norther-Lyon, but for those who may have regretted missing the chance.  OR does the new 220lb weight limit suggest it may be a little more stout?

The only difference I spot is that this is 1" threaded, my Stag was 1" threadless. But both would be QR, rim brake, canti post, 650x42 under fenders. Black with sparkles isn't my jam but I could get over it. Luckily I have an rSogn to hold me over for a while but I might shed a tear this type of bike disappears.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a Stag second hand that the previous owner had converted to 1" threaded. A rare gem! The one thing I've been curious about is the reviews on the Stag fork, knowing folks felt it wasn't very compliant. I've often wondered if a Lightning Bolt fork (if sold separately) would provide a more compliant ride.

I certainly have way too many bikes, but I’m more intrigued by the next run of Crust Romanceur Canti’s.
All that this bike is and lugged.

I jumped on this after seeing the announcement on my Instagram fee.. I had been holding out for the next Canti Bolt for quite awhile. In fact, tired of waiting, last month I got on the waitlist at Gallus Cycles to have a bike made. Since I have not ridden a bike with low-trail geometry, I was apprehensive about committing to a custom project. I reread the Bicycle Quarterly review on this frame the other night and decided to pull the trigger. Now my fingers are crossed that ordering the medium was the right call. I'm worried it may be a tad too small, but the jump up to the large seemed way too much.

I've ordered a ton of parts. Now I'll sit back and watch the supply chain hustle.

That's an interesting question.

The fork on the V1 Lightning bolt is pretty nice in terms of compliance
(the fork on my True North 700c rando with Reynolds Imperial Oval blades
is nicer riding, but only a bit), but I'm not sure that experience with
the V1 forks will translate to the V2 fork which use the Pacenti flat
fork crown instead of the Long Shen sloping fork crown on the V1.

I welcome anyone wanting to correct me on this but my gut feeling is
that all else being equal, the longer fork blades on the V2 fork will
experience a bit more fore-aft flex and hence be a bit more compliant.
Whether it's in the range that humans can detect is unknown.

If anyone can give me a reason (even if specious) to buy this which explains how this would ride differently from my Rawland rSogn I'm all ears!  :)

I’m also on the fence about picking one up. I have a Boulder that sets a high standard when it comes to a bike like this; how can the lightning bolt be any better (it likely isn’t)?
Given the nature of the bike being the only production lightweight 650b randonneur I’m still intrigued. I also like the idea of having one on ice in case I wreck the Boulder.

The reasons the canti Lightning Bolt would ride differently from your Rawland rSogn include:

1. Every bike is different
2. New Bike Day

Two other differences to note: the Rawland Sogn from all reports is definitely heavier and has a treadless headset.

Asking, despite this frame certainly not being in the budget... but when has that ever stopped anyone.
Do we know the current tube spec on this version? Or, at least what the previous versions were? I remember only the V1. Also - were any of the other Crust frames standard gauge?

Probably not much different than an rSogn Ryan. Besides the current(not for long) availability of the LB, maybe lighter tubes and 1" threaded steerer? My rSogn accepts a TA double on a 116mm spindle while easily clearing 2.2???'s. No reason besides N+1 for us that I can see.

On another thread I’d thought someone said these bikes have 7/4/7 tubing

Is that correct? How does one tell that? I don’t see that on the listing.

If it is 7/4/7 all through, I’m surprised it’s not a bit lighter

I’m curious about the geometry.

Slack seat angle. More comfy ride? Pair with zero setback post? I know I really liked how an OPEN MIN.D rode.

Also, not much bottom bracket drop. Intended to pair with quick steering? Different from Grand Rando, NFE, Pelican or Norther

I don't know enough about the geometry to explain why, but the rSogn feels like a bit more front wheel flop to me than other bikes I've ridden far (Somas, Stag, cSogn). That's fine for general riding, but wouldn't be great for a long brevet. Maybe the Crust is slightly different there, who knows.

FYI Mine just shipped.  I also was a little skeptical of the increased weight limit.  Once I get it all together, I'll let you all know what I think.  It's replacing a cyclocross frame that identifies as an all-road, so it should be better than that at least.

Quick search didn't find anything specific to the 2022 edition, but the 2020 model is listed in Reed Kennedy's ultrasonic tubing spreadhsheet:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/

Thanks!

Interesting how it comes out 7/5/7. Probably just inaccuracy in the measure, maybe a proprietory tube similar to Old Columbus KL?

The size in that spreadsheet is a small. IIRC, Large and up have 8/6/8 tt and beefier DT (OS?).
