I was making my normal rounds of the local pawnshops and I found what is likely an early to mid 80's Nishiki Olympic 12.  The stickers weren't in the best shape but it definately said "cro-moly" and what appeared to be "seamless".  "Tange" and a big "5" were also on the seat tube as was "Japan".  I found a bike online that is the same dark blue color and appears to have the same components (sugino crank, suntour shifters/front derailleur).  Would this be a suitable candidate for a 650B conversion?  The angle of the chainstays was pretty shallow so I don't think it had a super low bottom bracket.  Also, the fork was pretty narrow looking so I'm not sure a 42mm tire would even fit in there.

Anyone have any experience with this model?  The frame looked in pretty good shape but I don't know about the mechanical aspects of the bike.  The price was $80.

This is pretty much identical to the bike I found (though not in the restored condition of this one):

I had one I built up 650b with Soma B-lines and it did well but the frame is just too small for me. even tried it with 26x1.5 paselas and BB was a little low but not bad. This particular frame has clearance for 25s in 700 c. Didn't ride it a lot because of the size. I do not think it would fit Hetres

Thanks for the information.  If it wouldn't fit the wider tires, then it wouldn't' be of use to me.

I'm not sure about conversion capabilities, as I had this bike before I got into 650B, but it certainly takes bigger 700C tires than 25s. However, I think it originally came with 27" wheels, which may make brake reach a problem. Not sure about bottom bracket. I really enjoyed this bike, would grab another if one came my way.

If you have a wheelset with the 42mm tires mounted, take them to the pawnshop and try them in the frame, assuming it's allowed there.

Going on abstract measurements can work, and people can give accurate reports if they know the exact model, but nothing beats seeing it in there yourself.
