Has anyone had enough experience with the Pacenti Brevet to form an opinion? Or to compare it to the Velocity A23?

Failing that, does anyone have thoughts based on conjecture?

Both are tubeless compatible, both are about the same weight, both are rim brake compatible and both offer the same width.

The Brevet is a little prettier, but on paper I'd give the edge to the A23 for my needs: It's available in OC for the rear, has a deeper cross section (more durable?), and is domestically manufactured but about the same price.

Ideally I'd rather wait until the Brevet has been in the wild longer, but I think I'm going to be buying wheels within the next couple months.

I like the A23 a lot.  The only negatives that we commonly see are that some people prefer a rim with eyelets and some people dislike how small (short) the brake-track is on the A23

I'm pretty eager to give the Brevet a shot.

I've been riding the Pacenti Brevets starting with the prototypes used on my Rinko bike in Japan. Since then they have been on gravel and are still perfect and true.
My wheel builder loves them and says they are easy to work with. Tires are easy to mount  and in my opinion they are as handsome as a rim can be.

Thanks very much Peter! That's more experience than I was expecting anyone to have with them. That's a pretty ringing recommendation.

Thanks to Bill as well. I'd forgotten the A23's reputation for a short brake track.

Between the two comments I think I'm ready to change my tune and give the Pacenti Brevets a try for this wheelset!

Peter, if you don't mind my asking, who's your wheel builder?

A set of Pacenti Brevets and Velocity A23s are both "in heavy rotation" on my 650b all-road bike. In winter, one wheelset gets studded tires. In summer, one set gets wider (SBH) tires for fenderless off-road adventures.

Both rims are very good. Both are tubeless compatible and have snug bead seats, yet both allow a tire to be mounted & dismounted with bare hands.

The Brevets are really beautiful and have eyelets. They are a joy to build and they tension-up very nicely. Photo of my wheels here: https://flic.kr/p/QRXWEE

The offset A23 gives a better L/R tension balance on the rear wheel. If you are a heavier rider or tend to be hard on your wheels, that might tip the scale toward the A23.

Kurt has hinted that an offset Brevet might be in the future. That would be the best of all worlds.

i prefer brevets over a23's as well. tubeless was much easier, as well as tubed mounting.

Daniel,
I've used the same builder for 20+ years now. He's built road, mountain and now rando wheels for me and also many of my customer's. All have been great and with no issues.
His name is Clarke White and his email is sxb...@aol.com

Maybe Bill's been luckier, but I'd add the A23's uneven rim joint as an extra knock against it. I know I'm not alone, and a google of "A23 rim joint/seam" will surely corroborate. For me, this has been beyond a ticking that sandpaper can fix--the joint was bulged enough to actually affect braking. That said, Velocity does seem good about slowly improving on QC issues, and this might not be an issue any more.

The welded seam on the Brevet rim is so smooth it almost seems "seamless"

IMO KP did a great job spec'ing this rim. The execution, fit and finish are all superb!

Can I assume the A23 is a non-machined brake track and the Brevet welded seam indicates a machines brake track?

Thanks. The A23 set I have is non-machined and luckily has a good joint.

For those who like the extra longevity of a non-machined brake track this could make a difference.

I was pleased with how easily Pacenti PL23s built up and ride so expect good things from the replacement. I like that the Brevet is less square shouldered than the PL23. And I like that it sounds easier to mount tires to too.
