So..... I'm building up a 59cm 650b Kogswell with Rawland Low Trail fork I just had it painted by a local amazing painter (Ajax Powdercoating).. The frame/fork came with 36h NOS Velocity Synergy black O/C rims.. I really think 36/36 is overkill, but I'd like to use the rims considering I already have them..

The other bummer about the hub choices for 36/36 holes on this build, is that the Kogswell P/R II is 135mm spacing. So trying to find solid 36h 135mm spacing hubs to run 10s has been a lengthy search.

I'm running XTR shifters and RD/FD and I kind of like the Shimano theme that's going on.

Does anyone have input on Velocity hubs? I found NOS XT hubs that are ball bearings and cones. The Velocity ATB hubs use cartridge sealed bearings, and the Veloity Sport hubs also use ball bearing and cone style like (Deore LX/XT).
Should I just go with the XT hubs, over the Velocity products? I've never see a comprehensive review on Velocity hubs...

Why? Plenty of black XT T780 hubsets around.
What colour is the frame/fork going to be?

Recent generations of Shimano MTB hubs with the faster engagement freewheel seem to have a poor reputation for durability:

NOS XT hubs may be a better long term investment.

Oh woah, those are some terrible reviews! I just assumed the XT stuff was at the very least good stuff. I guess not :-(

This is probably a long way around, but what about getting a longer axle and adding a 5 mm spacer on the NDS of the 130 OLD hub of your choice?  You won't be able to use the hub's original specs for wheel building, you'll need to measure the hubs carefully, but aren't we supposed to do that anyway? ;)

There's no difference to you between 8/9/10 speed Hyperglide freehubs, Any Shimano MTB hub from the last 25 years will work for you, even the new "11 speed" models (they changed the mtb cassettes, not their hub standard). Their Centerlock disc hubs come with a cap for the rotor mount, you won't see any difference.

Or you could visit your local bike co-op and pick almost any black rear hub in the used bin.

It;s nothing special, but he basic level Deore is an excellent and reliable hub and easily found in the parameters mentioned.  eBay has many e.g.

Velocity hubs are fine, no problems with them. Quite a popular choice
among riders in my area. If you get the complete wheelset built by
Velocity using their products, they offer great warranty service too.

Thanks for all of the tips.. I went with XT hubs.

I painted my frame and fork like a battleship grey color (Dupont color selection).

FYI: I never used anything other than 130mm hubs on my P/R II.

Whoa! Thanks. I slid a 130 mm spaced Circus Monkey hub I had sitting around, and it fit in with no issues..

I got a used bike for my son a couple of years ago.  it came with a set of Velocity wheels.  There was a little play in the front hub and with the sealed bearings, no way to adjust it out.  I contacted Velocity and they sent me a new bearing set: no charge, no questions asked.  The replacements came quickly and the installation was simple.  It was a very smooth rolling, very lightweight hub and from my brief experience (have not ridden thousands of miles on it or anything) they make an excellent product and stand behind it.

I might be wrong (usually I am) but I believe Matthew spaced the rear dropouts on the PRs at 132.5 so 135's or 130's would fit. I have a new one still hanging in my garage yet to be built and I hope I'm right because I have a set of wheels spaced 130 that are kinda earmarked for it..
