I put a set of 40mm Schwalbe G-ones on my gravel bike recently-thought I'd do a little review.

I've had good luck with Schwalbe mtb tires and these seem to be just as good.  They're not a supple tire in hand-the sidewall is stiff.  I set them up tubeless on Pacenti rims.  They weren't easy to mount-the fit is quite tight.  The upside is that they inflated easily--a few strokes with the floor pump was enough to set the beads.  They measure a pretty true 40mm.

I varied inflation from mid-30's to low 40's and they performed well at those pressures. (i weigh around 160)

Out on the road, they are fairly quiet and reasonably fast on pavement.  There's a high-pitched hum, almost a whine at higher speeds.  On dirt, they really grip well.  We had a freak run of warm temps here in Michigan so  I got to try them on a variety of surfaces.  Some wet/greasy/muddy, some dry, and some loose and gravelly.  They are much more reassuring on varied dirt surfaces than the Hetres I've used on this bike for years.  On one long, straight downhill I let it roll, perhaps foolishly.  The road passed into shade and was wet, slimy, rutted, potholed.  I was able to steer around the worse of it securely-the tires didn't slip and held to my chosen line securely.  When I skirted the edge of rutted sections, the tires resisted slipping into the rut and tracked true.

I've been wanting to try something bigger and with more tread-the Terrene Elwood in 650bX47mm for example, but they won't fit my bike with fenders.  Based on my experience with these tires on my usual mixed-surface routes, it's hard to see a need for anything more.  (though a bit more volume to allow greaty compliance over rough sections wouldn't be bad!)

Steve,

How wide to they actually measure on Pacenti rims? Are you using PL23?

Yeah, PL-23's.  I don't have calipers so my measurement isn't precise but, laying a ruler across them they measured pretty spot on 40mm...

I always enjoy seeing your Quiring, Steve. Such a cool bike.
Thanks for the review. I had a similar "into the shadows" moment this week in the Muskegon area on Parimotos. I would have liked some tread on the rutted peanut butter mud.
Looks like winter returns soon, but it was a good riding week.

Thanks!  Yeah, I rode in shorts two days ago-tomorrow it's back to reality.  Going to be quite a shock to the system...

Steve, I like your review. It pretty much sums up how I feel about my G-One's. I was running Compass tires then switched to the G-One's for a trip last summer. The defining moment was biking the Snoqualmie Pass in WA with my buddy. The G-One's performed so well on wet, rocky, rooty single track that they became my "all rounder tire" and sold the Compass'. With that said, I probably have 1,500 miles on the tires (rough estimate) and they are wearing out quickly. There is a noticeable wear line down the center of the tire. The little knobs are ripping off here and there in sections. I'm rough on bike parts for sure. I switched the front to the rear and will just use them until they go. I ran them with tubes on my Ritchey Ti Cross breakaway but was getting so many flats. I switched them to my newly built Salsa Vaya Ti going tubeless on my HED Belgium Plus rims to White Industries CLD hubs. I'm ripping around enjoying pavement and soil in San Diego. When they finally wear out I'll switch some new Schwalbe Marathon Supreme TL Ready 40mm tires that just arrived.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Bruce in San Diego

Thanks!  I wish I'd read it before posting-some embarrassing typos and awkward phrasing.

I rode them again today, mostly pavement.  Cold-30 degrees and a stiff west wind.  I only did 24 miles and it felt like plenty.  These tires really don't give up much on the pavement-I think I'm going to really enjoy them.  Did notice today that they make a funny noise when riding through pavement, sort of a tearing, rattly whine.

Tubeless Marathons?  Wow, that's pretty cool!  I was a reluctant adopter but I've really come to like and depend upon tubeless set ups.  I only have tubes in three bikes now, my Kogwell PR commuter and both my Rivs.  I'd need to invest in new rims/wheels and of course tires to convert them.  Maybe down the road a bit...

Proofreading fail again!  That funny tearing noise is when riding through puddles...
