Has anyone used the Smooth 62 Honjo fenders that SimWorks sells, or seen them in person?

These ones:

They were recommended by the builder I'm working with for my new custom, and I'm trying to figure out if they provide as much coverage as the Compass Honjo fenders:

Unfortunately SimWorks doesn't list the length. I emailed them a few days ago, but no word yet. Any of you lovely iBOB or 650B folks know?

Reed

There's a good chance they're the same fender or close to it. They're both 62 mm wide so they should offer the same coverage. But to answer your question I have not seem them in person.

Hey Virgil,

I should have specified: I get that they're both 62 mm, and should work similarly in that regard. The thing I'm trying to figure out is how "long" they are, how much of the wheel they cover.

Compass spells this out:
Front wheel coverage: 95 cm, 145°
Rear wheel coverage: 130 cm, 200°

But SimWorks leaves us wondering...

Reed

I considered these fenders, but decided to go with the 700c 63mm fender from VO. I don't care much for plain round profile fenders. The VOs are only 80/110, but I'll rotate the front one back 5-10mm and both will get long mudflaps.

I think it's a safe bet that the SimWorks are no longer than the Compass ones and that might be 5mm shorter on the front.

My builder also asked if I wanted him to add those fenders to another order for my bike. Who is your builder, Reed?

This bike is being done by John at Fitz. I'm extremely excited about it. It's almost my turn!

Using the 700c fender is an interesting option. I also am not wild about round unadorned fenders, but after a very wet winter here in San Francisco I'm after as much fender coverage as I can get and then add mud flaps to boot. And I agree, it's unlikely the SimWorks fenders are longer, but if they're about the same length I'll go with 'em since John likes them. (Plus, they're about 20% less expensive.)

I thought it might be Fitz. Mine is at the powder coater currently so he must be working on yours soon!

When I build mine up you'll be able to see how well or not the VO fenders fit. My buddy reshaped them for Rat Traps and they fit great so I should be gold.

Good stuff Justin! I'm excited to hear you've got a Fitz in the works too. Please post and let us know how it comes out? I'll be extremely curious to read anything you might choose to share about it. And see pictures, of course!

Heard back from SimWorks! As others suggested, they were very helpful and very apologetic about taking a bit of time to get back to me.

The person who replied actually measured the fenders in question for me and gave me these figures:

Simworks:
Front: Approximately 85 cm
Rear: Approximately 124.5 cm

Compass:
Front: 95 cm
Rear: 130 cm

So they almost certainly aren't the same fenders, though they may share the same profile. The Compass rear is a bit over two inches longer, and the Compass front is almost four inches longer!

Ha. They're not all that much shorter, Reed, and will offer very good coverage. The front is 10mm or around 3/8" shorter while the rear is 5.5mm or about 7/32" shorter.

I don't think that's accurate Justin. The measurements I was given are in centimeters, not millimeters. Assuming I was given correct numbers, that means a front difference of 10 cm / ~4 inches and a rear difference of 5.5 cm / ~2 inches.

Jan has said that he had Honjo make especially long fenders for Compass, so I tend to believe the measurements.

While I don't mind losing 10 mm of front fender, I would sure rather have an extra 10 cm of front fender!

Reed

I'm running two pairs of Honjo's that I bought from Compass a few years ago. They are fluted, 58mm wide and I can testify that they are indeed quite long.

Sorry, I don't have a measurement to give you, but I can say that it is really nice to be able to tailor the coverage they give to your specific needs. I ended up trimming the front fender, and leaving the rear intact. The resulting coverage is really nice and I feel makes a difference in terms of staying dry in the rain.

Yeah, my mistake. That's not insignificant.

So, why is it again that you don't want to go with the Compass fender that we assume uses the same extrusion? Price?

Just that the builder making and assembling my custom recommended the SimWorks fenders. I figured all else being equal I'd go with the recommendation.

Since it sounds like the Compass fenders suit my use better I'm planning to ask if he's down to use those instead.

Just a data point, but I have Honjo fenders on a bike and they are long, look great and provide very good coverage.  That said, I have to pay more than normal attention when I am walking the bike down a step or two as the long front fender likes to scrape the step or whatever it can find.  I have to lift the bike more, and not just roll it.  I have thought that a somewhat shorter fender length combined with a flexible fender flap might be the perfect solution but I have not, and probably will not, do that.  I just try to remember to take care.

^ I don't always remember, so inevitably end up bending or breaking something when I ride off a kerb. IMHO it's better to use a mudflap!

If you want the extra length of the Compass fenders I say have your builder use those. It's your bike after all, and the main advantage is you being able to control all avenues.

I hear you Virgil, but I'm approaching this bike as a collaboration with the person building it. Of course he has skills I don't have, but he also has background, experience, and knowledge I don't have. When I want something different than he's suggesting I'd rather talk about it and explore the differences, rather than just dictate my way. I picked this builder because of his experience building this sort of bike, so disregarding his suggestions out of hand seems like a good way to lose out on that experience.

I've already learned a few things from him by approaching things this way!

They also make the a version in black which Compass would likely never try to match:

Hi Reed,

Would you mind providing an updated regarding your fenders? Did you go with the Simworks or Compass fenders? Are you happy with the resulting coverage?

I am considering those two options as well and would love to hear your experience.

Thanks,

Seth
