My new bike is going to have more room (width between stays at bridges) for wide fenders so I'm shopping!  I have Portland Design 650b-east fenders on my old bike (over 650bX48 Compass Switchback Hill tires which will go on my new bike as well) and they're "alright," but I'd like to have a bit better coverage side-to-side.  I'm not interested in fiddling with the very nice looking fenders that have to be drilled for hardware, Berthoud, etc, so that limits my options somewhat.  I like the looks of Velo Orange's Wavy fenders but they're only minimally wider than the 650b-east I'm replacing.  So I'm considering various plastic option from Planet Bike and such, or maybe the 63mmX700c Velo Orange model, lightly re-radiused to fit 650b.  Anyone tried the Wavy fenders that can comment on coverage?  Any other options I should consider?

Thanks,
Steve

I have the VO wavy fenders on my Endpoint HG and they provide good coverage imo for my WTB Horizons. I'll try to get you pics. I also looked for this same purpose. Since I didn't want to re-radius, I felt that my best choices were the VO or the larger Honjo-Sim Works options. I went with the VO because my LBS could easily get them.

Thanks, Craig-I'd appreciate some pictures!  My Switchback Hills mount wide-nearly 50mm, so I need a wide-ish fender.  I really like the Honjo/Sim works options but I don't want to have to mess with drilling for struts and such.

Here are the best photos I could manage. The alignment of the front fender is askew. It's my first fender rodeo, so pardon me while I figure out wtf I am doing. I've ridden with these in the wet and the coverage was good for me (no real basis for comparison except for fenders that were clearly too small). Front is WTB Horizon on Velocity Blunt SS. Rear is WTB Horizon on WTB i23 rim.

I have the 60mm wide 650b Berthoud stainless steel guards over Switchback Hill tyres. Plenty of width coverage, and the rolled edge on the guards confines virtually all the spray when riding in the rain:

I tried multiple fenders from SimWorks/Honjo, PDW and Planet Bike. The VO Wavy fenders were by far the best fit for my WTB Byway tires. Near perfect fit with minimal fuss on my Endpoint Hunter-Gatherer.

Hey Chris, Did you try the SimWorks 62 Smooth? I have those and the fit seemed really good with Byways.

Thanks, Nick-were you able to purchase these pre-drilled?  I'm not handy and drilling my own mounting holes in a curved surface is an unrealistic goal.

They come pre-drilled for the stay attachments and the mounting points under the fork crown and at the chainstay bridge. They don't come pre-drilled for the mounting point at the seatstay bridge, as the distance of that from the chainstay bridge varies from frame to frame. And they don't come pre-drilled for the mudflap, as it's optional whether you fit one.

I've installed two sets of the VO 700x63 fluted fendersets on bikes running SBHs. It's quite easy, and requires minimal reshaping of the fender. Just lightly pull both edges outboard along the fender radius to get them reshaped down a bit to the radius of the SBH. Great coverage, and I'm nowhere near the tire at any point. Leaves and small sticks still pass though just fine. Unlike what I've witnessed on some Crust frames with 62mm curved Honjo/Simwork or Wavy VO. I like this VO model better than the Honjo/Simworks version because there is an indent in the rear fender that allows the chain and front derailleur to move inboard for low gears without hitting the fender. Like all VO fenders, they come predrilled except for the seatstay junction.

The bikes are an Elephant NFE, and a rim brake precursor NFE.
