Looking for a randonneur shop with a wiring wizard that has the soldering skills, dexterity, and eyesight that I no longer possess.  I have lost my grounding connections several times and need to restore connectivity in a more secure manner.   I am taking a road trip from San Diego to Oregon in few weeks and would appreciate any recommendations of shops that could permanently resolve my issues.

Thanks

I bet Norther Cycles in Portland or Box Dog Bikes in SF could set you right. They both have lots of experience with Rando bikes. I'm sure others will have more recommendations. I've lived in both SD and LA, but can't really think of a shop to recommend. The one touring-oriented shop in SD that I went to for a similar issue did a horrible job.

I'd highly recommend that wherever you decide to go, call ahead and give them a heads up. Diagnosing issues and wiring dynamo lights is time consuming and even shops that have the know-how might not keep all the materials on hand.

Best of luck with your search!

While not specifically helpful to your query, I am always curious about using the frame as a ground.  I run two wire through the whole system and if an issue arises it is pretty straight forward to diagnose.
It would be great to see some images of your set up, particularly the locations where you are having problems.
Each broken part is a learning experience, but you don't want to learn in the dark while moving on a bicycle.

Hi Lorin,

I wish I could help. How about Ocean Air Cycles in Ventura?

Lorin,
This may not be what you're looking for, but a motorcycle repair shop could be your best bet.  Many MC mechanics are pretty good at troubleshooting & repairing electrical gremlins.  I think a small independent shop may be best, maybe specializing in older bikes (sorry - motorcycles).
