I've gotten my hands on a conversion candidate, an '87 Bianchi Sport SX that will take sub-40mm width 650b tires with Tektro R556 calipers. Thinking the Soma 650x38.

The only issue is the 126mm rear dropout spacing. I'm considering respacing to 132.5, though if I can get something with a 130mm rear hub I'd take it. Velo Orange sells a pre-built with their 130mm rear hub.

Anyway, looking for a lightly used wheelset, or a good rear wheel, for less than new. This bike will be just an occasional rider around town so a basic build is OK.

Thanks,
Ed

J & B is selling their budget wheelset again with Shimano Altus hubs
and the Weinmann rims (based on Rigida Sphinx extrusion). Any shop
should be able to order and sell to you for around $100/pr. They are
135 rear, but it might be possible to re-space to 130.

this seems like a great deal for $100 shipped. Zac 19 rims are low end but i used a 700c set on a loaded tour without issue

Concur.  Not the prettiest rims in the world but they hold up well.

Those are the J&B set, so your LBS should be able to order them and
sell for the same price. Best, joe

I just received this wheelset from the eBay seller. How would I go about respacing the rear hub? Never done that.

I have an older set of those wheels from that seller.  Nice wheels, decent rim, but I ended up detensioning and replacing all of the nipples with DT as the nipples used in the build were no-name, and many were rounded.  Really hard to beat that for a set of built wheels, though.

You will need to replace the spacers behind the lock nuts, and
possibly replace the axle.

Yikes, sounds like I should just spread the frame. Thanks

Replacing the axle is easier to do than spreading the frame.
Check the axle length.
Measure the thickness of dropouts.
Or measure the outside dimension of the dropouts and compare with the overall axle length.
If the axle would protrude  beyond the dropouts it must be replaced because the quick release won't work because it cannot be compressed.
Finding the right spacers?  I am not so sure.   Anybody know a source for the proper dimension?

I've found Shimano hub spacers to be somewhat random by model. Best to
take the axle out and take it to the LBS. They'll have a draw full of
axle spacers. You need to take 5mm off the non-drive side to drop the
spacing from 135->130. You'll have to re-dish the wheel to move things
back to center (rim needs to move towards the drive side, in this
case).

The upside to re-spacing the hub is removing any chance (however
small) of damaging the frame. It also eliminates having to realign the
dropouts (though for 5mm change, it's probably not essential to do
anyway).
