What are my tire options between 32mm and 38mm?

I'm toying with the idea of trying out my Land Shark road bike as a 650b conversion. I just did some measuring and it seems that although I might be able to get away with 38mm, it would probably be wiser to look for something a little narrower. The land shark's chain stays are not dimpled at all. If I go forward with this, I'll be using SL23s. Any of you found a tire that measures closer to 36mm on that rim? I think that going with 32s would lower the bottom bracket too much.

My main reason for wanting to convert this bike is that it is my main bike for longer rides and the occasional brevet, and I often carry a bag on the front of it. Switching to 650b would lower the trail a little as well as making the ride more comfortable.

Alternatively, you can convince me to sell these sweet White Industries / SL23 wheels that are taunting me and stick to 700c.

Schwalbe has 650b version of Kojak that measures closer to 34mm on SL23. Soma's 650b Express tires also measures 35mm on wide rims.

Pari moto 1.5", if they're too tight, dimple the stays.

Loup Loups work too but bigger investment if things don't work out.

If you can't fit a 38, stick to 700c. Doesn't seem worth the effort otherwise.

On my sl23, the pari moto measures 38 more or less on the dot.

I posted a question about the new Pari-Motos and got no response. Seems they are now making (at least marketing) a 38mm and a 42mm version. I bought a pair labeled "27.5x1.5" and "42-584". I mounted one on a CR-18 (just had it around for eyeballing clearances), pumped it up to 80psi and let it sit for a day. It measured a true 38mm, maybe a hair over. As I understand it, the original Parimotos were labeled 38mm and were generally true to size. So, I don't get what's going on. It's like they made a second narrower tire. Weird.

All that to say, I agree with Nick and would give the 27.5x1.5 Pari Motos a try.

Can those of you with 38mm pari motos and/or loup loup passes tell me the height of the tire on a 23mm rim? And also the distance from the axle of the widest part of the tire? This would be very helpful. Thanks!

That was a typo above. The tires I mounted were labeled "27.5x1.75" and "42-584".

So 1.5" = 38mm and 1.75" = 42mm

Originally the parimoto was just a 1.5/38. There are now two tires called "pari moto", the original 1.5/38 and now a 1.75/42.

I'll try to take measurements later.

Thanks Nick and everybody.

I took some more detailed measurements myself and it does not look good for the Land Shark as a 650b candidate. But the measurements might help someone else in the future, so by all means post them if you've got the time. Thanks!

My Loup Loups are about 36-36.5mm on PL23s at 40 and 35psi. I have them on a Univega gran rally that also has non-dimpled stays. I think there is maybe 3-4mm clearance on each side. No problems so far, but I imagine there would be some rubbing if I ever broke a spoke. This bike has horizontal dropouts, so the clearance can be adjusted slightly.

These?..

Hutchinson 650B x 32 Confrérie

I'd be curious to hear your ride experience with this combo, relative to a 700c x 28mm tire. I reckon the 700c set-up is likely to be more comfortable (bumpiness-wise), whereas the 650b set-up might allow for a more natural frame layout / handling than 700c. (My comparison has been with 650b x 38 and 650b x 34 and 700c x 26 and 700c x 28... Maybe I wasn't riding the creme de la creme of 650b choices, or lowering the pressure sufficiently, but the larger wheel diameter can make a positive difference on bumpy roads. I'm planning on trying out lower pressures this season... once the ice melts for good!)

For a couple of years I rode a Litespeed which I had converted from
700x28 (Conti GP 4 Seasons, which actually measure 26.5-27mm, and were
the largest size that would fit under the fork crown and brake bridge)
to 650bx32 (Grand Bois Cypres). That was the largest tyre that would fit
between the chainstays. The bike was noticeably more comfortable over
lumpy chip-seal roads with the 650b wheels. The only downside was that
with 76mm BB drop on the frame I had to learn not to pedal through
corners or I risked getting pedal strike. Picture of the bike in its
650b guise here:

Very useful - it sounds like we have Loup Loup at ~36 mm, Kojak at ~34 mm, then Cypres at ~32 mm, so there a few options depending on available clearance, BB drop, etc.

Thanks everyone,

I had the Soma B-Lines on Velocity Synergy rims for a while. Nominally they're 38mm, and the web site even says, "a true 38mm width" (emphasis is mine), but I found them to measure more like 36mm. The B-Line is basically a Pasella with no puncture resistance, so a nicer rolling tire than the Soma New Xpress.

I have the 38 mm pari moto's on SL23 rims, on for about a year so fully stretched out, measure 39 mm's at ~45 psi.  I don't have a fancy caliper, just a little plastic jobby, but I think on the SL23's the pari moto's are going to measure out a little larger than what is on the label.

FWIW - great combo, I really like the pari moto ride.

Also used the Hutchinson 650B x 32 Confrérie's on a Soma Smoothie conversion, don't recall the rims but they measured out to 34 mm wide, unfortunately only 30 mm'ish high so that might be an issue with pedal strike.  Great value at xxcycle (I think), like $30 ish with shipping.

Rivendell Maxy Fasty and Nifty Swifty tires are 33.4 mm +/-. Grand Bois Oursons are 34 mm. You may have to look around to find them, but they're around.

I've got a lightly used Nifty Swifty if anyone wants one. It was roughly 34mm wide mounted on a Dyad rim. I can fit Hetres or wider now so I have no use for it. $15 plus shipping.

I just put a new "38mm" Pari-Moto on a Velocity Synergy rim, which I guess is also 23mm wide. The tire came out to just under 35mm width at about 40 psi.
