26 inch tire recommendations

Folks 

I have a 26 inch Atlantis build. It's an older model and will take a maximum of 47-48mm tire, actual measurement on a 17 inch rim.

I have the 2 inch Marathon Supreme and Marathon which both fit (they measure 47mm) . I would like a tire of a 47 mm actual measurement. Lighter and more supple.    I have the older  Gravel Kings 1.75 (they measure 41 mm ) and I'd like something closer to the two inch model.

I see the panaracer 2.1 gavel king knobby .  Thay might fit.  But I couldn’t find the weight.

 

I am thinking the extra 5 mm of tire is worth it.

 

Any recommendations?

I will be using it on rough pavement packed dirt & some lose gravel.

Are you riding on paved roads exclusively? 

I highly recommend the SimWorks Homage if you enjoy riding mixed surfaces. 

I feel that it rolls as well or better than the only GK available in 26" nowadays--the knobbies you mentioned.

Check pricing at Blue Lug or Circles as sometimes shipping from Japan can be better than buying stateside.

SimWorks sells a Panaracer-made tire called The Homage.  It's a 26 x 1.95 or 47mm, according to their website.

I have a set of them on my XO-3, (since I couldn't quiiiite fit a Rat Trap Pass, which would be my preferred tire) and they roll great and are reasonably light and supple to me.

Also, I didn't know there was an Atlantis with such tight clearances?  I thought any Atlantis could be Rat Trap'd.  But, there's a lot I don't know.

I have both the SimWorks HOMAGE 650b x 43 and the 650B x 55 tires. Yes, both of them roll great and are reasonably light and supple to me as well. I recommend either one of them. I mostly ride on pavement in the 43's on my Rivendell Clem.

i like the maxxis dth, which comes in 2.1 and 2.3 inch widths. this may be wider than what OP can use. they are the budget alternative ($35-$45 each depending on which variant). i couldn't bring myself to spend more on tyres than i spent on the bike I'm putting them on. they are certainly not as supple nor as light as the rat traps pass etc but if you are coming from the awful marathon supreme (the tyre that nearly ruined bike touring for me!) even the dth will be a revelation in speed and comfort.

coincidentally, i spent last night decoding maxxis literature to learn what all the different marketing junk means. so that my time was not in vain I'll summarise here: they are originally a bmx tyre, so they come in 20" and 26". you can get them in wire bead or Kevlar bead. the exo variant has additional sidewall protection fabric- no experience with how this affects suppleness or rolling resistance- and either dual or single compound- the dual are reputed to roll faster. i believe but I'm not sure that the tan sidewall version is the only dual compound version.

i don't do any riding that calls for knobby tyres, and i don't like the feel of them on pavement. the dth has a grooved tread profile vaguely similar to the pasela or the marathon.

Schwalbe offerings tend to be at the top of my supple and affordable list.  Thunder Burt or Racing Ralph; Billy Bonkers can be had pretty cheaply in wire bead and a little less cheaply in folding.

Here to give a +1 to the Simworks Homage. I've been riding this tire as a front for several years, around town, on trails, and on several mixed terrain tours. They give me no problems at all, transition very well from pavement to all kinds of trail surfaces, and I ride them basically until they completely lose all structural integrity. I honestly don't think I've ever flatted one. 

I recently discovered that a Rene Herse Humptulips fits with no fenders on my MB2 with Dyad rims, even though these are labeled as 2.3" wide. I also really like this tire for chunkier stuff, but wouldn't ride it around town. 

And, I have to say, I did not like the Maxxis DTH, they are the budget option, but they did not last as long and flatted on me several times.

The 26" Toyo Atlantis includes a 47cm size that officially only accepts up to a 1.75" width tire. A friend has one and I can attest to it having significantly tighter clearances compared to my 53cm Toyo Atlantis. Although we never tested its limits, I suspect it won't fit anything close to a RTP.

To the OP, I run 26x1.8 Naches Pass tires, standard casing, on my Atlantis. It measures 40mm wide on a 23mm (ext) rim. This is narrower than your preferred width, but I find the NPs entirely adequate for paved/light gravel/packed dirt riding. For reference, I also have a Rivendell All-Rounder shod with the 26x2.3 Rat Trap Pass or its knobby sibling the Humptulips Ridge, so I'm not unaware of what the wider tires can do.

I appreciate this discussion and am paying attention to it (as well as the recent one that was either here or on the BOB list), as I plan to rebuild my '93 MB-4 (the dark green one with gold graphics) as either a city bike or a "gravel" bike this year. I do wonder if anyone happens to know the biggest tire that will fit under a fender is. I don't have anything to experiment with.

I have found that it's easiest to stick with something like 1.95" when fenders are the plan.  Bigger can often be accommodated but it gets trickier/more specialized.

Homage and fenders are easy and, in case you haven't heard... It's a good tire!  Pairs well with SKS and VO 26" options.  Shreds gravel sin problemo.
