Is that also a conversion from uprights to drop bars or vice versa?  How are the brifters working for little hands?

We bought it stock about 13 years ago, it was stock with drop bars, etc.
My wife used it daily with swept back bars and porteur rack.
When she commandeered my Rodriguez randonneur, my son stepped up to the Bridgestone.
My son -ten years old- started using it this year.
He specifically asked for drop bars and sram shifters.
He loves it.
We ride every day.

Thank you for sharing that. It's heartwarming that your son actually specced the bike and I'm guessing most of us enthusiastically remember our first good bike. I have to say that your boy is well ahead of the curve in that respect. Fantastic.

Yeah. Super cool. Lucky kid indeed.

Those RB-1's make great conversions. We've done a couple.

Great taste in bags too!

Chris, this guy always has specific requirements for his bags. It drives me crazy.
The front is a custom sized Brevet to fit his U lock and snacks.
His rear pannier is custom sized to fit his lunch box and clarinet.
He asked for no leather because it's too heavy, and wanted them to be not too fancy so no one would want to steal them.
So logical.

I guess all RB-1s are not made equal.  I saw an RB-1 conversion once, guy had these super narrow 650Bs, maybe 28mm wide, and he said they barely fit.  An early tire now discontinued, forget the name but before the silver-sided Hutchinsons.  And yet, the posted photo definitely looked like Col de la Vies to me,l and there's no way they ever would have fit that first RB-1 conversion.  Did they change a lot from year to year?

I assume they did? no idea about chainstay clearance from year to year.
But yeah, horizontal to vertical drop outs, fork crowns, etc. surely changed.
This one is a 1991.

I have a 49/50cm RB-1 (for sale, and also 1991 I think) that easy fits 584-32mm GranBois Cypres when 650B converted. Plenty of clearance for 32mm between chainstays.

Nice blog, I enjoyed reading about the RB-1 sagas.  I noticed that you started 650b-ing way back in '07 and lamented, "It's likely we'll not be able to find a reliable tire supply for this bike in a decade." We're all glad your cynicism proved to be incorrect - we have way more better options! ;)

Thanks. Yeah -- I forgot about that poor prediction. I'm full of those.

Glad I was wrong on that one.

Hmmm...  I'm only familiar with the later RB-1's, such as the '93 I bought new and still ride. Even using 700C wheels it'll fit rubber much bigger than 28. To test I just now stuck a 700C wheel with a Conti GP4000s II 700x28 tire (which measures a smidge under 32mm wide on the pictured Pacenti Sl23 rim) in the fork and it's tight, but I'd run it without worry. To my eye the pinch point looks to be the back side of the seat-tube, since the chainstays are racing bike short. There's gobs of room between the chainstays.

This is a 700C (almost) 32mm wide tire, one would expect a wider 650B rubber to fit in the same space.
