Hi everyone,

I have an old and lovely 531 steel frame I’m looking to explore some light modifications on - specifically adding additional water bottle bosses, overall alignment, and if possible adapting the fork for internal dynamo wiring. Looking any recommendations of where I might be able to take this to in NYC or surroundings.

Also looking for recs on where to go for affordable powder coating in the area.

Thanks!

Hey

Well you got a few frame builders who may be down for that.  Porter Cycles (@portercycles), Horse Cycles (@horsecycles) and Johnny Coast (@coastcyclesnyc).  Could give them a ring and see if they are down for something like that.  I know Horse does paint too.  As for powder I think I know someone who got their frame powdered at Espos in Staten Island.  I don’t know if bikes is something they are that experienced in but could be someone give a call.

Try Vicious Cycles in New Paltz. They do wet paint mostly, but I know that they also powder coat. Not sure if they'd be interested in a single frame though.

The shop I've used for several frame "improvements", alignment and repainting (wet, not powder), with extremely good results, is Chelsea Bikes. They lost their space in Chelsea due to a building being unstable (next door, I think), but they've always had a shop in Union City
Owner Rafael Vazquez and his head guy Victor Galvan have both been very easy to work with. Highly recommended.
Their Union City shop is a stone's throw from the Lincoln Tunnel, and accessible by bus from Port Authority.

I have second-hand recommendations to two Jersey possibilities. That means I've heard lots of good stuff, but haven't had any work done personally. I doubt either of these places are easily accessible via public transit from NYC, putting this out for the suburbanites or otherwise cage-enabled folks.

The Bike Stand/Steve Willis/Scotch Plains, NJ: Steve lists frame mods on his website, sends frames to The Color Factory in Waretown for paint. Steve is active on Classic Rendezvous, is a good dude, definitely knows his steel-frame stuff. I don't know for sure that he's doing the frame mods in-house, but since he's upfront about where he sends for paint, it sounds likely. I may check with him directly today, if I have energy after dealing with the extra 8" of snow falling right now. Didn't know Jersey somehow moved to Vermont....

The Color Factory/Bruce Risley/Waretown, NJ: Bruce does wet paint, and has been a go-to Jersey guy for paint for decades. He's got no website to speak of, you call/email and he emails you the same brochures, with the same prices, that I first got from him via snail mail almost 20yrs ago. He starts at $150 for a one-color spray. Blasting/stripping/decals/1-color/clear plus return shipping oughta run not more than $250.

I'm fuzzily recalling I saw somewhere that Bruce does minor framework, like bosses and such, but not repairs, like tube replacements. But it doesn't say that in any of his paperwork, so you'd need to check directly to make sure. Turnaround seems to be a couple/few weeks, so pretty quick.

I've been meaning to have a couple/few frame resprayed at Color Factory for going on 20yrs now. Somehow has never happened, my respray budget always gets blown on parts and such. Came close-ish last year, hoping '21 is the year it actually happens.

If you're open to heading east consider contacting Jamie Swan, especially regarding wiring. He builds beautiful rando frames.
