Does there exist a silver 650b tubeless disc rim? Something along the lines of KOM i23?

I believe the Velocity Blunt comes in silver

I had the current version of the Velocity Blunt SS in polished silver then got cold feet about the disc build I had been marinating on and returned them. They are really gorgeous rims. Purchased them from Universal Cycles with one of their perpetual discount codes and they were almost reasonably priced by current rim standards with super cheap shipping. If I recall correctly I paid $85/rim and $6 UPS ground shipping for the pair.

velocity also makes the Aileron (sp). it has an aero profile, so it is a bit taller than some other rims, but is disc specific and silver. please post if you find anything else... if WTB made a KOM i23 in silver i would be over the moon!

Velocity advertises the Cliffhanger as tubeless ready, 650B, polished and non-machined sidewalls for disc.

Worth mentioning here - the Blunt SS is i26.6mm and 395g, Cliffhanger is i25mm and 625g - as per Velocity's specs.

Yeah, but is so heavy. I'd avoid that for sure.

Good suggestions so far in the Aileron and Blunt SS. Velocity knows people like the polish and offer many of their models with that finish.

I'd say the Aileron is a good choice if you're gonna rock 25-38mm tires and aero is on your radar. On the other hand, I think the Blunt SS (not to be confused with the Blunt, which IMO is too wide for 42mm tires) is a great choice if you want tubeless and polished and will never use a tire narrower than 42mm. I've used 42mm Pari Motos setup tubeless on Blunt SS and they setup great and gave me no trouble. The tire profile was fine, but it was definitely more "upside down U" than "lightbulb".

If you wanted to go to the trouble, Crest Mk3 rims have a nice smooth shape and no eyelets so if you were inclined to strip the anodizing and polish a rim yourself this would be a nice one to choose.

Second for the Blunt SS. Just built a set. They are incredibly light for such beefy rims, were easy to build, look great and ride better. Tubeless setup was a snap - used a floor pump and didn’t even remove the valve cores. What’s not to like?

The Ailerons are nice, and light, but I’ll warn that they aren’t exceptionally robust and the taller profile exposes more surface to hazards. I have a ding in one and the one other person I know with them has an identical ding.

We've built a number of wheels using Ailerons.   All rims can ding given the right conditions.  I've had customers ding or dent Blunt 35s, Duallys, Blunt SS, WTB Scrapers, Velocity Deep Vs, the list goes on.  You wack a rock the wrong way...  The Ailerons are stiff, build up well and look good.  The Blunt SS rims are very very light, and have quite flexible bead hooks, like Stan's rims.  We've mounted Compass tires on them and had the tires repeatedly blow off the rim at 32 psi.  That would not happen with an Aileron, which is 70g heavier.

You could wipe the fingerprints off of your shiny polished rims after you mount the tire ;) wink wink

I have also heard that Blunt SS rims and Compass tires setup tubeless is pretty hit-or-miss.

It looks like a great rim, but I’m not sure i’d roll the dice by building up a wheel set and dealing with hassles. Supposedly it’s totally fine with tires from other manufacturers.

Curious what the issue could even be. I've setup (non tubeless) Pari Motos on Blunt SS and didn't have any issues.

Not sure what version of Stan's rims James is referring to, but I've used the Mk3 versions of the Crest and Flow rims and the design has proved to make it super easy installing every tire I've tried.

Thanks a ton for all your suggestions! Given the tire width, the Blunt SS are just a little too wide for me so I looked into the Crest Mk3. I emailed Stans asking if they'd sell them non-anodized and they pointed me toward Project 321 who used to do anodizing for Stans and now just sells custom anodized stans rims. Called them up and spoke with an extremely helpful woman who talked me through my various options of what they have in clearance and my options and suggestions if I were to find an anodizer I could trust to be very careful about not stripping too much off rims in the de-anodization process.

I ended up snagging the last pair silver polished Stans Crest (non-Mk3) 27.5 32h rims for $115 for the set (wow!) from clearance of old stock. Apparently, they're not authorized to sell silver/polished Crest Mk3 rims but are allowed to sell some of the other current stans rims in silver. Odd. Maybe Stans is holding out to sell silver versions at some point. Seems like a pretty solid rim for this use from the sound of it should be a great option for the lightweight all rounder build I'm putting together.

On the phone she also suggested using Sapim Laser 2.0-1.5 spokes saying that they shave a whopping 40g per wheel off their race spokes. I'm not a super gram counter, but that's good to know and I may just have to take that recommendation. They seem like great folks over there.

Spoke wind up is pretty egregious with Lasers so be advised. I think Stan's still sells the older version of the Crest for $30 per rim.

Sapim CX-Ray has similar weight to the laser, but makes the windup super obvious.  In some ways it is easier than building with most round spokes.

What about the Pacenti Brevets?

You can use a rim brake rim with discs, but you can't use a disc brake rim with rim brakes....

Also the VO Diagonale but that has a more obvious braking surface

Just to piggy back off a previous comment, how much do people generally invest in awesome spokes? I've always just bought sapim double butted spokes at .60 each and been ok with that.

I’ve been building with Sapim Race exclusively for years, I order them through Dan’s Comp which include nipples in the price - last I ordered they were .40/spoke and they’ll do most any length. Nothing but positive experiences with Dan’s.

I think those are the same I generally order. They're .60 each now for double butted and like .25 for straight gauge

I had this same question a couple years ago and couldn't find one. I removed the anodizing from a pair of Pacenti TL28 and they turn out to build up easily, are fairly light for their width and work well for 42 or 48mm tires. The ano removal was easy and fast.
