Nitto M12 rack challenge

Trying to tweak the M12 rack I just picked up to fit my 650B Custom.... Can't seem to get the rack close enough to the tire and keep it flat.  I'm using Paul Touring canti's which have a special bolt to allow mounting of front racks. The Paul's bolt moves the rack mounts a little further out.   Any suggestions or certain sequence?  I'm about ready to order the M13 from Compass Cycles.

The mount at the fork crown is the fixed point that you can't really do much about. So the rack legs can be bent, within certain limits, as needed to reach wherever the canti studs are, but as the rack moves in response to that tweaking it's going to rotate about the junction of the rack and the fork crown. So you can get it closer to the tire, but it will become more or less level - more if it was flat to begin with, less if it was angled up to begin with. The Paul's rack-mount adapters will rotate the front of the rack up a bit, which will more likely than not help keep it level, but move it a bit further away from the tire. 

I have a cSogn that already has an M12, and to which I am mounting Paul's brakes. The V-O canti-boss adapters I have are not long enough for me to use with these brakes. I got replacement SS canti mounting bolts (they have a cap head, like the Paul's bolts, but they don't have to) with a suitably longer threaded length, and a pair of inserts to fill the spaces in the brake bodies where the bolt heads would normally go. The former was thanks to a great metric-hardware supply place near me, and the latter was due to luck - my LBS happened to have a pair of Al spacers that were for exactly that purpose.

I just ordered an M13. I 'll use the M12 down the road on another bike.  Hopefully I can bend everything back to where it needs to be then. 

 

The Paul's straddle cable is up pretty high so it should be no problem clearing the U shaped bracket on the M13.

Thanks for the reply Jan, I wish I would have known all this before I bought all of these items. I really like the Paul's cantilver brakes. I'll contact the frame builder and see what he would charge for a custom front rack.

Put a spacer between the rack and the fork crown that moves that mount out by the same amount as the Paul bolt. That is probably about 5mm.

The M12 won't get the rack that close to the tire on most bikes. It is designed to work on as many bikes as possible, not to sit as low as possible. It sits at a safe height on most bicycles.

I'd rather not drill a counterbore on my freshly powdercoated frame.  I'll look into different brakes for this bike as well a custom rack.

 

I also was thinking I would need to have a spacer in front of the crown bolt. Even with that the angle and height of the rack are less than adequate.

Talked to the frame builder today. he is going to build me a custom stainless steel rack so I can keep my Paul Touring canti's.
