Is there any real discernible difference in drag between these two? Anyone who's tried both? Can you also charge USB on the SV-8 or does it require a special light like the Luxus?

I only have experience in shimano ultegra dyno hub and the shutter precision sv-9, and the sv-9 feel smoother but they are different wheels/tires so it's hard to discern.

I have an SV-8 that I've used with a B&M E-werk to keep my Galaxy S7 phone running during long rides; it slows down the discharge of the phone, but can't quite keep up enough power, even with the lights off. This is at my usual average speed of around 14-ish MPH.

In terms of smoothness, the SV-8 is noticeably better than my old Shimano dynohub; I get no discernable vibration at any speed.

Thanks, I'm rarely keeping up 14mph for long periods of time. the PV-8 might be good to keep the phone charging while riding.

When I say "low-speed", I mean stamping on the pedals going on a good gradient, at ~3-5 mph. I think going beyond that, the two hubs probably are not very different.

I'll generally run a battery connected to my USB connector (Sine Wave Engineering USB module).  That way, even if I go below 5mph, I'm still charging.  The battery will still discharge over time, but it gets the period juice it needs to keep me running for 3 days at the very least.

Am I right inferring the SV-8 is designed for less power output and less resistance(?) at a give speed than the PV-8? That the SV-8 is intended for higher average speed in other words.

The SV-8 is designed for little wheels (like 20-24 inch) I think.
