Decided to share my Boulder AR build since so many have been shared lately. Here's my 2014 All Road size E stock geometry. Absolutely love this bike! This Boulder was thoughtfully integrated by the nice folks at G&O Family Cyclery in Seattle. Wish I had better pictures but enjoy the ride so much I forget to take photos of it.

Great looking bike though it looks like the seat tube integrated light is mounted lower than the top of the fender. I know mounting the light on the back of the seat tube keeps it protected but I'd rather have it be visible to traffic to keep ME protected! ;)

Looks great, I'd love to get a test ride on one of those frames.  Of course I'm reasonably certain it would just confirm that it's a great bike and I'd love to own one (which I already know today).  Was the buying experience good? Any tips?

Thanks Tony- overall it was a pretty good experience working with MIke Kone on the stock frame. He took the time to respond to emails carefully and spent time over the phone talking about specifics of the bike. Before the Boulder, I was riding a Rawland rSogn. He asked what I liked about it and didn't like about that bike. Honestly, I couldn't really complain too much about the rSogn, at 190 lbs the fork seemed sufficient for what it was intended to do and the bike planes super well for me. I was looking to add a frame to the stable that was intentionally built for 650Bx42 and after seeing the quality of a friends All-Road I was sold. Mike did mention that weight wise, I was between the skinny and light OS tubesets. I opted for the light OS for added shimmy resistence though my skinny tubed rSogn didn't shimmy at all with the Miche headset. He said it would be stiffer than the Rawland but not by much. My assessment- the light OS All-Road planes just as well for me and its difficult to notice much of a difference while climbing. On descent, expecially on rougher roads, the light OS tubeset inspires more confidence and feels more planted and secure- think 20 mile loose gravel road descents in the Cascades.

He sent two sizes for review before locking down the order and went over the differences which was much appreciated- the smaller size better in the shimmy battle- the bigger size more comfortable over distances. One thing to keep in mind is when you want to recieve the frame- sounds like Waterford is usually ~2 months out. I ordered my frame in mid-january and recieved it mid-March. MIke and his team spends a day or so doing QA/QC before shipping it to the customer. Mike was happy to recieve follow up emails on the bike and when my local LBS had questions on build ie. routing the rear taillight wire and setting the nitto rack- Mike's team was more than happy to help. He has a wealth of knowledge with performance oriented frames which is shown in the latest generation of frames.

As for the taillight braze-on mount location- I too was concerned that it would too low but in practice, as long as the drivers sight line is higher than the light it will be seen. You have to be lower, perhaps on a recumbant to not see it.

All in all a good experience!

Justin,

Sounds like a great experience with plenty of engagement from Boulder.  Good to hear especially as their sizing information is different than I'm used to seeing elsewhere, maybe because it's more specific... including the projected stem information makes a ton of sense in a bike that is intended for a very specific component build - 'fully integrated randonneur'.  I think that is the biggest draw for me actually.  At 205lbs (ish) I'd probably be on the light OS tubes by Mikes recommendation as well.

I think I'm going to concentrate on the frames I already have for now, get in as much riding as I can and maybe revisit a low trail randonneur type frame in a year or so.  Congrats again on your new bike, thanks for sharing!

Nice color too!

Just had Tyler at G&O build new wheels with Compass rims for me, and sort a challenging bottom bracket issue on my 650B Saluki. Great work.

great bike and build.

Tell us more about the color. It almost looks chromed in the photo.
That's not one of Boulder's stock colors I think? Is there a custom color charge?

Thanks Mitch- really liked how your Boulder ARs turned out as well.

The color is Gunnar Silver. Since the frames are built at Waterford, which also maked Gunnars, we have access to all the colors that the stock Gunnars are painted. I think it looks a bit chromey due to the clear coat. There was a reasonable upcharge but forget how much.

Also, forgot to add how clean Waterford TIG welds look. Their builders do nice work!

Justin-

Do you have a full lighting setup on this?  It doesn't look like a dynamo hub, but you mentioned wiring to the taillight...

Care to share the fender and rack specifics?  Does the front of the front fender bolt to the rack?

Thanks for posting!

Can you provide the wall thickness of the OS tubing you got. Could not find on Boulder website.

It is good to hear the OS tubing planes, so I am curious as to the wall thickness.

Brad- The front hub is a Son28 powering an Edelux II. Wiring goes through the downtube, out the BB shell and into the rear fender. The left side of the fender was uncurled and the wire place inside then closed again. It powers a Secula on the fender. I'll try to get some shots of that this weekend. Rack is a Nitto M12 and bolted to the fender. Boulder prefers the M12 as it is wider thus more stable for a front handlebar bag.

John-  top tube is 1" 7/4/7 and the downtube is 1 1/8" 8/5/8 (Light OS) using Platinum OS X. Pretty awesome ride quality on this tubeset!

I would prefer to have a fender taillight instead of a seattube taillight as well. I wonder if there is a way to run the wire through the chainstay and then up the fender stay.

Thanks for the response, Justin.  What kind of fenders are you using?

Hammered Honjo 51mm from Boulder Bicycles. I planned the install for about a month then took about 8-9 hrs to execute. Watched Hirose do his thing on YouTube and read the instructions on Jitensha. Found an easy work around: rather than mark places needed to drill with a marker I would instead lightly indent the spot against the rack or seat stay bridge to mark the spot. Also, used Anton Tutters trick for the daruma indent with much success. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae7DhXEhQrI

Justin how are the clearances with the tires, I think you went 42mm?
