Alternatives to Horizons?

I sold my last pair of Horizons this weekend and am looking for alternatives in the same-ish size 47-50 for my (just shipped out today) BMC Road+. I liked the Horizons well enough, but wouldn't mind checking out something different since we seem to be in some kinda 650b renaissance. Alternative to Horizons in that they are slick (for knobs I'm sticking with Tburts), at least 47-50, tubeless ready and around the same price point?

Browsing Universal's site it looks like pretty much every tire company is now on the 650b bandwagon. From Clement to Michelin to Teravail, Terrene, Donnelly, Schwalbe. I see that some of these companies (like Donnelly) are bypassing 47c altogether and going to 50c, kind of interesting.

Thanks for any insight!

Forgot to mention that I did buy some Gravel King slicks 650bx48 because I love the 42's (which were not as supple as BSP of course, but were nice enough riding and were crazy light but tough). Was stoked that there was now a 48 GK slick but was aghast when I weighed them. They were way heavier than Horizons, the former even having thicker tread. Head scratcher for sure, and ended up returning them.

Pari Motos seem to exist out there in 47:

Hey Sukho,

Of course you know about the Compass Switchback Hill. And of course I know you know about it! So suggesting it feels resoundingly unhelpful. But suggest I will! I just love this tire.

Best price I can find on the Horizon is $61 per, and the Switchback comes in at $68 per. So it's not even all that more expensive?

Congrats on the BMC Road+! Can't wait to see how it builds out.

Best,
Reed

Now that is definitely a tantalizing option. Didn't even know it existed. Thanks Cary!

Hey Reed! You putting those $$ numbers up had me chuckling a bit (and actually surprised Horizons were that expensive compared to SBH's). This is because I've never paid full price for the three(!) sets of Horizons I've had; lucky CL find, trades, etc and I never really looked at how much those actually retail for LOL. However I'm thinking I'll have a harder time finding SBH's out there in the same manner I was able to snag Horizons :-)

Regarding the Pari Moto's - they're very thin. Wonderfully supple, but the center tire thickness, tread and all probably isn't more than 1mm. If you can get them cheap enough, they would be wonderful road tires, but you might not get a ton of miles out of them. I wouldn't recommend them for anything gnarly off road.

I for one quite like the Horizons I've decided!  The SBH felt TOO supple to me.

Are the 47 Pari Motos different thickness tread than 38 or 42? I put many miles on a few sets of 38s and was happy. I've moved up to the 42s now and they seemed similar construction but I don't have the miles to say if they last similarly yet.

I think Horizons come standard on some bikes now. My LBS had a set of take-offs they gave me gratis because they had no idea what to do with a non-mtb 650 and knew I would make use of them.

@ Ryan: The Inquisitors will be visting you shortly...

I have two sets of 48mm GKs at home, a set of black slicks, plus a set of brown SKs; I'll have to weigh them. If the SBH ELs are like the Écureuils, but wider, they should be pretty amazing, but Panaracer, GB & Schwalbe tyres are easier and cheaper for me to get than anything from the USA. :-(

Stephen

Now now. To quote the Dutchess of Windsor, "You can never go too supple or too fat." Or something to that effect.
