Hi all. I'm looking for a centerpull brake that will clear a 45mm ish fender with a 38mm tire. I put on some Diacomp 750s last night and I really don't need the reach that they offer. I only need around 65mm of reach with my current set up. Would the MAFAC Racer work?

Thanks!

Christian

Hey Christian,

You should be able to find everything you need right over here: https://ruedatropical.wordpress.com/2009/01/11/mafac-dia-compe-paul-centerpull-brake-specs/

Best,
Reed

I understand there are three version of the of Mafac Racer, with 48.5-63 mm reach, 53.5 - 68 mm and an adjustable version with 55.4 - 75 mm. Sounds like as long as you don't accidentally get the short reach version, you should be fine.

Christian,
Like Steve said, all but the shortest Racers will work.
I have a set of the Dia Compe 610s, excellent condition, new shimano brake shoes, levers with built in quick release.

You can have them for $25 including shipping.

It's difficult to spot different reach models simply by looking at the front of the calipers.
The shorter reach variants of these Mafac brakes have a stamp "451" on the back of the arched mounting plate to which the individual arms mount. Because the racers, competition, and 2000s have the same distance between mounting bolts, you can mix and match arms to plate if you wanted.
I'd choose a model based on brass bushings and ease of straddle wire release.
The adjustable reach models simply have a bigger cut out for the central brake bolt, allowing you to set the arched backing plate higher or lower.
"451" short reach seem relatively uncommon on eBay, but maybe more common among the competition model. There were also competition brakes rebadged "Peugeot" and "spidel".
I really like mafac brakes but even with the straddle wire released, you might have to deflate a 38 mm tire to get it past the brake pads. Raids excepted, of course.

Thanks all for the info! I dug through the parts bin at the local place but couldn't find enough to put a good set of racers together. For now I'm going to use the Diacompe brakes.
