Just got an email from Pacenti offering a rebate deal on any purchases of SL23 rims.  I know that the original Pacenti box rims had problems, but I am unaware that the SL23 had any issues.  I love these rims; so much that I bought two extra pairs when they were discontinuing them.  Am I missing something?  Are there reports of problems with these rims that I am unaware of?

I weigh 175 pounds and ride a 28 hole rim on the front, 32 on the back.  I built the wheels myself and I am definitely an amateur wheel builder but these wheels have been bombroof for me.

Or is it just a marketing ploy to get me to buy more rims?

There certainly were reports of cracking around the spoke holes on the V1 SL23s. Not sure if that issue was solved in the V2.

I think most of the problems were centered around the PL23 rims. I had cracking on those but the second version that Pacenti sent to replace them with were great.
I also had a pair of SL23 rims on a different bike but never had any cracking issue and I believe they are still going strong with another owner. Maybe I had a later version that were improved?
I did hear mention of problems with some SL23 rims but never saw any photos or experience any problems myself. Seems like if there were issues it was a very small percentage of rims because there wasn't much chatter about it online.

Another data point - I had problems with Pacenti's CL25 rims, both 700c and 650b size.  The 700c rear rim cracked at the spoke eyelets under 500 miles.  The 650b rear rim actually started to split around the circumference of the rim after a couple thousand miles - see attached.

No more Pacenti for me.

This new program probably has a lot to do with Kirk’s exit and new ownership wanting to get rid of any potential lawsuits before selling all the IP to a larger corporation or ownership group. I’d wager this brand isn’t long for the world as we currently know it.

Kevan's pics are rather scary, but my v1.0 PL23s haven't cracked (yet); I only weigh ~65kg though, and didn't build them with super-high tension.

If someone wants to send me the code, I'd appreciate it.

I tried posting a response earlier today, but my browser ate my reply.

My recollection from following this stuff since 2015 is that the V1 PL23s and V1 SL23s were the most prone to cracking, the latter mostly in low-spoke-count 700C form.  The V2s of each seemed to be much better, but not perfect.  Perhaps low-pressure 650B tires are kinder to the wheels, so they are less likely to crack or go out of true?  I've got nearly 3000 miles on my V1 650B SL23s, with a reserve set of V2 rims for when those wear out.  Great stuff.

I wonder what Kirk will be up to next!
