Greening Bella Vista: The Next Generation
Bel Arbor Tree Tenders, a volunteer greening
group in Bella Vista has been organizing tree plantings in our community since
1997 (about 100 trees total). We started out growing our own trees in the
Bel Arbor Tree Farm and planting them in the community (since phased
out). In the last four years, we have been the neighborhood
organizers for the state-sponsored TreeVitalize project that provides free
trees that are then planted by volunteers in the community. The next
planting will be in the spring of 2010.
Our (very small) group is at a crossroads--we need new people who are
interested and willing to become trained "Tree Tenders" to help
us continue. We invite anyone who is a "greening" person
and who would like to be involved with other like-minded folks in tree
plantings and in "feet on the ground" tree maintenance projects
in Bella Vista to
sign up now for
the Fall 2009
Philadelphia Green Tree Tenders Training program. It consists of 3
consecutive Wednesdays in October: Oct. 7, 14, and 21.
It's a hands-on, very informative, and fun-filled training on tree biology,
planting, proper care, and more. The 3-part series is free, but if you
are interested, you need to sign up
now. The sessions
fill up quickly. Sign up with a couple of neighbors and friends
(that's how we got started)-- Go to
www.pennsylvaniahorticulturalsociety.org
and choose "Tree Tenders Training." (Indicate that you will be
affiliated with Bel Arbor Tree Tenders)
To repeat: It's great fun, very rewarding---- We are
a very small group of volunteers and to continue, we need new people who
will take the Tree Tenders' training course.
Planting trees is just the first step, helping to maintain them and
to educate others how to maintain them is the crucial second
step. Email Carla Puppin
