Sometime soon after I formulated my "quandary" question I ran across this article in "Jewish Currents." This is another version of the question (#10) I brought up and I could identify with the answer, even if it didn't really satisfy me on an intellectual level. See what you think.

One of the things that I appreciate about being Jewish and raising our kids
as Jews, is that it provides a structure to good values. Celebrating
Shabbat dinner is known as family night in other circles, asking forgiveness
from those you've wronged is WAY more effective than asking forgiveness from
a priest, and every Passover I realize that wiping down the cupboards in my
kitchen once a year is a really good idea. Just a few examples... Of
course, obviously non-Jews find lots of ways to do good in the world and
live their values, but a lot of Jewish traditions remind us of what's
important on a regular basis.
