Does anyone else think that the new hours for the laundry room
(8am-8pm everyday) seem ridiculous?

I don't see how anyone who works a typical job here in New York will
be able to use the laundry room other than on the weekends, which will
most likely make it even more crowded than it normally is on Saturday
and Sunday.

Why is this being done?

Jesus, how difficult would it be to contact the management company and
simply ask if there was any way to adjust the hours of the
laundryroom? I am sure that if these new hours were an inconvenience
for the majority of the building, management would take it into
consideration, and adjust them accordingly. I understand that these
discussion groups are necessary, and an important outlet for sharing
concerns, and experiences, but for the most part, all I ever read on
these things (or hear in passing) are the incoherent, paranoid, vapid
ravings of bored and miserable individuals who rent apartments, but
want to behave as if they own. I mean, really guys, when I decide that
I want everything in my home to be exactly the way I want it. i.e.
keys that give me endless access to everything, doorstaff that cater
to my every whim (including the far-fetched and unreasonable), and the
right to set rules and standards in the building based on what pleases
me... I will buy a place. Until then, sad as it may be, we have to
respect the rules set by management, especially when they sound like
rules implemented for my safety, and the safety of my neighbors.

For those who have nothing better to do than to log onto discussion
groups, and complain, aside from the obvious "get a life" suggestion,
may I also suggest checking out the list of 101 best books ever
written, you might find a better way to spend your spare time.
