Urgent Appeal Update: 24 November 2008

9 arrested last night at launch of Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA has been released

The nine individuals arrested last night (23 November 2008) during and after the launch of the Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA last night have been released under police bail around 4.30am this morning.

Seven individuals were arrested during the event while the other two individuals, YB Salahuddin Ayub and Mohamad Sabu, Vice President of PAS, were arrested when they visited the seven arrested at the Pandan Indah Police Station.

SUARAM protests strongly against the arrests of the 9 persons. We view the arrests as a clear human rights violation as people should be allowed to practice their rights to participate in a public assembly.

SUARAM would like thank all who had sent protest letters to the relevant agencies and authorities. We appreciate your continuous support towards the struggle for justice and human rights.

Dear Sir,

Re: 7 arrested during the launch of Malam Himpunan ISA, 2 arrested at police station

We are writing to you, once again, to express our outrage and to register our strongest condemnation over your government's ongoing crackdown on public assemblies. As regards to the above, 7 individuals were arrested by the police during the launch of Malam Himpunan ISA tonight, organized by the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI). Two more individuals, YB Salahuddin Ayub, MP of Kubang Kerian, and Mohamad Sabu, Vice President of PAS, were arrested when they went to visit the 7 individuals arrested at the Pandan Indah Police Station.

We are appalled by your government and the police's latest actions and view this as yet another attempt by your government to intimidate Malaysian citizens from participating in any form of public assembly.

We demand that all those arrested be released immediately and unconditionally. We further demand that your government stop the assault on freedom of assembly and all forms of criticisms.

With this relentless attack on freedom of assembly, despite your rhetoric on your willingness to reform the police force, you have demonstrated the traits of an iron-clad ruler, with no regards whatsoever for basic human rights standards.

We strongly urge you, once again, to stop bringing shame to Malaysia, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. We would like to remind you that freedom of assembly is guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

Yours sincerely,

Urgent Appeal: 23 November 2008

7 arrested during launch of Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA

The authorities has once again showed intolerance towards peaceful assembly when 7 individuals were arrested tonight during a gathering organised by the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI).

GMI is organising a big rally, Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA, next year on March 2009. The launch of Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA was scheduled to be held at Dataran MPAJ, Pandan Indah at 9.00pm tonight.

Before the scheduled time, the police had set up roadblocks at roads leading to Dataran MPAJ. Despite that, by 9.00pm a crowd had gathered at the field for the event.

At about 9.30pm, Mohamad Sabu, Vice President of PAS, addressed the crowd that had gathered and was making an announcement to call off the event when the police came onto the stage and asked for the organisers to stop the event. During the process of negotiation between the organisers and the police, 7 individuals were arrested.

The following are the individuals who were arrested:

  1. Kamaruzaman
  2. Mohd Sani Hamzan
  3. Saripuddin Mohd Yatim
  4. Abdullah A. Rahman
  5. Mohd Amir Ali Mohd Shah
  6. Hafiz Zulkifli
  7. Azman Abdul Hamid

Those arrested are currently held at the Pandan Indah Police Station (03-9274 222). SUARAM urges you to call the police station to urge for their immediate and unconditional release of the 7 individuals.

SUARAM strongly condemns the police for their ongoing attacks on freedom of assembly, a fundamental right which is guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. We demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested.
