I just posted this in reply to a comment posted on the Canadian and East Coast 505 list servs, so I might as well post it here, too.  I'm not on the EC 505 list.

Some may agree, some may disagree, but I want to state my own position FWIW.

I submit that the ABYC 505 Worlds should be held earlier than late September, so as not to interfere with the school year for North American youth sailors and their families.

The ABYC 505 Worlds proposal was discussed at the Varberg 505 Worlds at the AGM in August, but there was no specific date that was agreed.

I believe my son Brendan and I were the only Canadian 505ers present at the Varberg AGM.

The ABYC's proposition was that their event could be held any time from May to October, as I recall.  I was excited by the presentation, because I love sailing at ABYC.

But a couple of Germans piped up at the end to ask for the event to be held in late September.

There was no general discussion or even debate about that date, just one or two comments that were hollered out at random in a crowded room, during a wide-ranging discussion about many issues.

No motion was proposed on the dates, and no vote was held for the dates.

As I understand it, the reason for any appetite for late September, is that the Europeans want to avoid interfering with their summer sailing season, by putting their boats in shipping containers.  That's understandable.

However, my own position is that for those of us in North America with kids, and also for young adult 505 sailors in North America, and for old people who sail with young adults like I do, then a late September 505 Worlds is much harder or else impossible to attend.

That time is well into school season in North America.

So the 505 class would definitely be excluding North American school-aged sailors and their parents, and college-aged sailors, by doing that.

Not a good look for a class that is trying to attract more youth.

If ABYC is willing and able to set the event for an enormous window of time from Spring until Fall, then I submit that it should be set some time in the Summer, for the benefit of 505 North American youth sailors, although at the expense of the one or two Germans who hollered out randomly at the Varberg AGM.

Hello All,
I must be slow on the uptake, but I just learned that 505 Worlds are in Long Beach, CA in 2027, late September.   We should start generating interest and plans to have a truck go west!
Plan accordingly,
Duane

After living and training there for 20 years, I would say that the best chance for the moderate sea breeze that LB is know for is mid August. That time period would have my support.

Two thoughts. ABYC calendar is going to be getting very busy as LA28 gets closer.
We’ve had great World’s post Labor Day-I14, F18, and Acat.

I would expect the Olympic Test Event to be finished by early/mid August.
